Austin Smotherman surged into the outright lead on day one of the Cognizant Classic in The Palm Beaches, carding a stunning 9-under 62 to open the Florida Swing in style.
The 31-year-old American tied the lowest round of his PGA Tour career at PGA National, highlighted by a stunning run of six consecutive birdies from the 7th through the 12th. He capped his round with a tap-in birdie at the par-5 18th for his second career 62 on the PGA Tour.
Smotherman, currently ranked 127th in the world, arrived in Florida searching for momentum.
He missed the cut in three of his first four PGA Tour starts this season, with a tie for eighth at The American Express his only bright light.
After what he described as a “rollercoaster” start to 2026, Smotherman took two weeks away from competition — a decision that paid immediate dividends.
"Two weeks off, I come out here today excited to play," said Smotherman.
"I’m glad I had an early tee time, not having to wait around. I just wanted to get on the golf course.
"Felt like the game was in a good spot. I didn’t play a ton when I was home, just took the rest when I could knowing I’m about to play as many weeks as I can until my wife is due with our third child on March 23rd.
"Figuring things out on the road solo this week, and the game kind of followed. It was a pretty easy round on a golf course that shouldn’t be this easy."
The 62 matches the number he posted in the opening round of the 2022 Bermuda Championship.
It also places him among rare company at PGA National, becoming just the seventh player to shoot 62 or better in this tournament.
Other players to achieve the feat include Jake Knapp (59, 2025), Matt Jones (61, 2021), Brian Harman (61, 2012), Chris Kirk (62, 2023), Brandon Hagy (62, 2021) and Tiger Woods (62, 2012).
Nico Echavarria, ranked 59th in the world, is tucked closely in behind Smotherman following after a brilliant 8-under 63.
Remarkably, Echavarria’s early-season form mirrors Smotherman’s, with one top-eight finish and four missed cuts to begin 2026.
Unlike Smotherman, however, the Colombian is already a two-time PGA Tour winner.
"Yeah, it wasn't the best start of the year, but I did play very, very well in Pebble, and those Signature Events give you a lot of points, so I'm happy with that," said Echavarria.
"The golf hasn't been that far off, and I could tell today that having patience and just enjoying it out there was going to be the key for the day, and we did that."
Taylor Moore, Jackson Suber, Kevin Roy, Daniel Berger and Kristoffer Reitain round out the top five on 4-under par.
Elsewhere, Brooks Koepka, making his third start since returning to the PGA Tour after quitting LIV Golf, endured another tough round with a 3-over 74.
Early pacesetter Smotherman has held a first-round lead just once before, at the 2023 Mexico Open.
He is still seeking his maiden PGA Tour title after 81 career starts, though he boasts three Korn Ferry Tour victories between 2021 and 2025.
