Former Ryder Cupper known for two-word outburst qualifies for PGA Tour event

Former U.S. Ryder Cup team member Jeff Overton has qualified for this week's PGA Tour event.

Overton earned his spot in The Cognizant Classic at The Palm Beaches in the Monday Qualifier at Tesoro Club.

He fired a 6-under 66 to join the likes of Rory McIlroy in the field at PGA National later this week.

Overton has spent the last few years battling a back injury that saw him absent from the PGA Tour between 2017-2022.

Last season he played on the Korn Ferry Tour. "My game is there," he said when he returned. "Now I have to get my health back."

Overton had a career season in 2010 that saw him post three runner-up finishes.

Overall, he placed 12th on the money list and had his best showing ever in a major at the 2010 Open, finishing 11th.

That saw him earn a spot in the U.S. Ryder Cup side that were defeated by one point at Celtic Manor.

At the time, Overton and Rickie Fowler became the first players to be selected for a Ryder Cup side without winning on the PGA Tour.

Fowler now has six PGA Tour wins and Overton is still searching for his first.

Overton is best known for yelling 'Boom Baby' after he holed a shot from the fairway during the third round of matches at the 2010 contest.

He was playing alongside Bubba Watson and their wild celebrations are fondly remembered.

Overton has a history of strong finishes at PGA National and was delighted to make his PGA Tour return.

He told reporters: "I feel like I’ve been playing really good golf lately.

"The game of golf is so competitive; there’s so many great players. It's really hard to get an opportunity anymore."
