Rory McIlroy was on fire during the latest edition of The Match.

The Northern Irishman won 10 out of 12 holes to win the charity contest against fellow PGA Tour pro Max Homa and LPGA Tour stars Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang.

McIlroy, 34, won a closest-to-the-pin tie-breaker under lights to raise $2.4m for charity.

The four times major champ even revealed an unidentified personal friend was donating $500,000.

There were a number of highlights for McIlroy.

He almost took a tumble early on when his golf ball came to rest awkwardly next to a bunker:

There was also this dart that set up his winning birdie at the final hole.

And another shot that made the highlight reel was McIlroy managing to save par by using his 5-wood from off the green during the 'one-club' challenge.

"That's better than a chunked chip," commented Zhang. "Dang," added Thompson. "Never a doubt."

A number of golf fans on X cracked jokes at Scottie Scheffler's expense, given his troubles on the putting surfaces in recent months.

"Maybe Scottie should give this a try," one wrote. Another aimed a dig at McIlroy: "That's the most confident stroke I've seen in years."

That prompted McIlroy to urge the world number one to perhaps try a mallet putter.

McIlroy said of Scheffler: "For me, going to a mallet was a big change.

"I really persisted with the blade putter for a long time, but I just feel like your stroke has to be so perfect to start the ball on line, where the mallet just gives you a little bit more margin for error."

He added: "So, I'd love to see Scottie try a mallet. But selfishly for me, Scottie does everything else so well that he's given the rest of us a chance."
