Huge par save on the tough 7th.
McIlroy found the face of the fairway bunker and was forced to splash out.
He then played a 5-iron down the flag to 20 feet and then buried the par save from right to left.
That will feel like an eagle to McIlroy after where he saw the tee shot.

The Northern Irishman curls in a 10 footer for birdie on the short par-4 5th to move one shot clear on 12-under par.
Fitzpatrick -11, Penge -11 (5)
Fitzpatrick and Penge join the lead with birdies on the short par-4 5th.
McIlroy -11 (4)
McIlroy bounces back with a brilliant birdie from nine feet on the par-4 4th.
He's back in a tie for the lead on 11-under alongside Penge and Gotterup.

Penge joins Gotterup in a tie for the lead with a birdie at the 4th.

He hacks around down the left side and then fails to convert his par save.
He's now one back as Gotterup has made birdie.
Aberg -9 (5)
Aberg also makes eagle on the short par-4 5th.
The Swede surges to 9-under.
Penge -10, Fitzpatrick -10 (3)
Birdies at the par-5 3rd for Penge and Fitzpatrick in the penultimate group of the day.
The English duo move to 10-under par and just one behind McIlroy, who is heading down the 3rd.
Scheffler -8 (5)
Incredible eagle from Scheffler on the par-4 5th.
He finds the green with his tee shot and then converts from 20 feet for an eagle-two.
The World No.1 vaults to 8-under and he's just three back.

McIlroy makes a safe par on the par-4 2nd.
Another huge drive followed by a wedge into 20 feet leads to a par.
He remains one ahead of both Gotterup and Knapp.
Clark found rough off the tee and it led to a bogey to move him back to 8-under.
Elsewhere, Straka has just popped in a second birdie of the day at the 3rd to move to 9-under.
Hovland -9 (6)
Hovland enters the mix from nowhere.
He's just roled in a fourth birdie in six holes to vault up to 9-under.
That's just two back of McIlroy.
McIlroy -11, Gotterup -10, Clark -9 (1)
McIlroy leads by one as Gotterup finds trouble off the tee en route to an opening bogey.
Clark, the third member of the three-ball, made par to remain in tied fourth on 9-under.
McIlroy split the fairway with a booming drive and then played a safe wedge into the heart of the green to 30 feet before two-putting for par.
Knapp -10 (1)
Knapp birdies the par-4 1st to move into solo third on 10-under.
The big-hitting American converted a 12-footer to get his day off to a flyer.

England's Harry Hall has just opened with three straight birdies and a par on 4.
Hall to 8-under, three back.
Straka -8 (1)
Two-time winner this season, Straka, has just thrown his hat into the ring with an early birdie at 1.
Straka, who should easily make the European Ryder Cup team again this September, moves to 8-under par and just three strokes behind.
Scheffler -6 (2)
Scheffler has immediately given back his birdie at the 1st with a bogey on the par-4 2nd.
The World No.1 is back to 6-under par and five shots off the pace.
You would think he's too far back.

We're off and running in the final round of the 2025 Genesis Scottish Open here at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick.
Rory McIlroy and Chris Gotterup hold the lead at 11-under par, two shots clear of the chasing pack that includes former US Open champions Matt Fitzpatrick and Wyndham Clark.
Jake Knapp and Marco Penge are also just two shots back.
World No.1 Scottie Scheffler is also in the hunt, and he's just birdied the 1st hole to move to 7-under par.
We're in for a dramatic final round.
