PGA Tour makes bombshell Bermuda Championship decision after weather chaos
Austin Smotherman and Seamus Power will battle for the title in a sudden-death playoff on Monday after the tournament was cut short at 54 holes.
The PGA Tour has confirmed that the Butterfield Bermuda Championship will be decided by a sudden-death playoff between Austin Smotherman and Seamus Power after adverse weather forced officials to abandon plans to complete the final round.
The tournament has been declared a 54-hole event, with the leading pair tentatively scheduled to return to Port Royal Golf Course at 9am local time on Monday, subject to weather conditions.
The playoff will be broadcast live on Golf Channel.
In an official statement, the PGA Tour said: “Due to the unfavorable weather forecast for Monday at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship and the uncertainty surrounding the completion of the entire final round on Monday, the tournament results will be considered final through 54 holes in accordance with PGA Tour Regulations.”
The Tour confirmed that a playoff between Power and Smotherman would determine the champion.
The decision follows a weekend of weather disruption in Bermuda, with wind gusts exceeding 40 mph forcing officials to delay Sunday's scheduled final round before play was cancelled altogether.
Smotherman and Power set for showdown
Smotherman, 32, and Power, 39, finished three rounds tied at 16-under-par, setting up a sudden-death battle for the title.
Smotherman is chasing his second PGA Tour victory this month after winning the Bank of Utah Championship by two shots three weeks ago.
Another triumph would mark an impressive run for the American, who posted rounds of 65, 66 and 66 in Bermuda.
Power, meanwhile, is targeting a second Butterfield Bermuda Championship title after winning the event in 2022.
The Irishman is looking to complete a PGA Tour hat-trick of victories, having matched Smotherman's 16-under total with rounds of 66, 64 and 67.
The weather-enforced decision means the pair will battle for the trophy, despite a crowded leaderboard behind them.
Taylor Moore, Corey Conners and Ben Silverman finished tied for third at 14-under, two shots off the lead.
The Butterfield Bermuda Championship is the fifth of eight events in the 2026 FedExCup Fall series.
