Xander Schauffele leads Rory McIlroy by one at Wells Fargo Championship

Xander Schauffele will take a narrow one-shot lead over Rory McIlroy into the final round of the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. 

Schauffele held a commanding four-stroke lead heading into the third round but the lead was trimmed to three shots as his round of 1-under 70 was bettered by McIlroy's flawless 67. 

McIlroy made birdies at 5, 9, 10 and 14 to close the gap on Schauffele heading into the final round.

The Northern Irishman's round of 67 was only matched by one other player on Saturday. 

Schauffele made birdies at 7 and 14 with his sole bogey of the day coming at 12. 

World No.2 McIlroy is going in search of his 26th career win on the PGA Tour and his second in a row following team victory alongside Shane Lowry in the Zurich Classic of New Orleans last month. 

He is also looking to win the Wells Fargo Championship for a record fourth time in his career.

McIlroy, 35, already holds the tournament record of three wins - 2010, 2015, 2021.

World No.4 Schauffele is looking to clinch his eighth PGA Tour title but his first in nearly two years. 

Schauffele, 30, has incredibly chalked up 20 top-10 finishes since last etching his name on a trophy at the Genesis Scottish Open in July 2022. 

Elsewhere, South Korea's Sungjae Im holed a bunker shot for par on the 18th to post a 69 and move into solo third on 8-under par.

Austria's Sepp Straka matched McIlroy's round of 67 to vault his way up to fourth on 7-under par. 

Former World No.1 Jason Day slipped out of contention with a disappointing 2-over 74 and the Australian finds himself in solo fifth on 5-under par.
