The PGA Tour will introduce a major change for the final round of the 2026 Players Championship as fans will be allowed to flood the 18th fairway behind the final group at TPC Sawgrass.

PGA Tour CEO Brian Rolapp confirmed that the ropes will be dropped as the leaders walk up the closing hole on Sunday evening, allowing spectators to follow the final pairing to the green in scenes reminiscent of some of golf’s most iconic finishes.

The move comes as Ludvig Aberg heads into the final round with a three-shot lead as he chases the biggest victory of his career.

The 26-year-old Swede sits at 13-under-par after a third-round 71 and will play alongside American Michael Thorbjornsen in the final group.

Rolapp said the decision was made to enhance the championship atmosphere and give fans a closer connection to the moment.

“We’re very excited about it,” Rolapp said.

“In order to really lean into the history of The Players and be fan-friendly and capture what the fans want, we’re going to drop the ropes on 18 when the final group comes up.

“This is so the fans can actually experience that championship feeling with the leader and hopefully the eventual champion.

“It’s a tradition that I’ve heard many fans want back, so that’s what we’re going to do this weekend.”

The spectacle of fans lining the fairway and surrounding the final green has produced unforgettable moments in professional golf.

One of the most famous came at the 2018 Tour Championship, when Tiger Woods walked up the final hole at East Lake surrounded by a sea of supporters as he secured his emotional comeback victory.

Tournament organisers hope to recreate similar scenes at Sawgrass as Aberg attempts to claim the PGA Tour’s flagship title.

Victory would represent the biggest win of Aberg’s career and his third PGA Tour title, further strengthening his growing reputation ahead of next month’s Masters.

The Swede admitted he did not have his best form during Saturday’s round but was satisfied to maintain his advantage heading into the final day.

“I made a couple of mistakes early, but hung in well,” Aberg said.

“It was nice to get off with a birdie on nine. I didn’t feel like I had my best stuff today, but overall I’m pleased with getting the ball in the hole.”

He also highlighted the demanding nature of TPC Sawgrass, where precision is essential.

“Sawgrass is about execution. If you hit the fairways and hit your shots you’ll get a lot of chances. If you don’t, you’ll get punished — and that’s the kind of golf I really like.

“I love these big-feel tournaments. Tomorrow will be a challenge, but I’m looking forward to it.”

Aberg might have held an even larger lead had it not been for a second bogey of the day at the 18th during his third round.

Instead, Thorbjornsen — still searching for his first professional victory — remains his closest challenger at 10-under-par heading into the final round.

Several other big names remain within striking distance in the PGA Tour’s marquee event, including Cameron Young, Xander Schauffele, Matt Fitzpatrick and Viktor Hovland.

With a historic atmosphere planned on the closing hole, the stage is set for a dramatic finish at TPC Sawgrass.
