Golf legend tears into American fans at Bethpage after shocking Ryder Cup scenes
Golf legend and former US Ryder Cup captain Tom Watson has slammed the American crowd for their behaviour at Bethpage last week.
Golf legend Tom Watson has ripped into the American fans for their shameful behaviour at Bethpage during the 2025 Ryder Cup.
Luke Donald's Team Europe had to deal with arguably the most hostile atmosphere ever experienced in Ryder Cup history.
The main target man for the home New York fans was a certain Rory McIlroy, who was verbally abused and insulted over the three days of play.
It was without doubt the worst during his Saturday foursomes and fourballs matches where he played alongside Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose.
A number of the home fans were shouting out with insults while McIlroy was even set up over the ball, which irked just about everyone who understands or respects our great sport.
McIlroy kept his emotions in check for much of the week, but at times he had to just give it back, and rightly so in our view.
The Northern Irishman was not just receiving verbal insults himself, but they were being aimed at his wife Erica who was following each of his matches.

Rory and Lowry had just won on 18 and he was coming back to 17 to cheer on the groups behind — and celebrate with Euro fans.

Former United States captain and eight-time major champion Watson, 76, admits he was "ashamed" by what he saw at Bethpage Black.
Watson took to social media to not only slam the home fans, but also congratulate Europe on their 15-13 triumph, as they became the first side to earn an away win since Medinah in 2012.
"I’d like to congratulate @RyderCupEurope on their victory," commented Watson on X / Twitter.
"Your team play the first few days was sensational.
"More importantly, I’d like to apologize for the rude and mean-spirited behavior from our American crowd at Bethpage.
"As a former player, Captain and as an American, I am ashamed of what happened. #RyderCup."
