But Shane Lowry holed a clutch seven-footer for birdie on the 18th to record the decisive half a point to ensure Europe would retain the famous cup.
Ties for both Tyrrell Hatton and Bob MacIntyre then saw Europe win the Ryder Cup outright 15-13, a scoreline we predicted for you in our latest golf betting tips feature at odds of 12/1.

But back to the top of the story, and McIlroy's savage move to place a European flag over the name of DeChambeau.
Despite DeChambeau's claims on the eve of the biennial contest that he would be chirping in the ear of McIlroy at the Ryder Cup, the pair never got to face off against each other over the five sessions.
LIV Golf superstar DeChambeau endured a week to forget, like so many of his peers on home turf.
DeChambeau notched a lowly 1.5 points having played in all five sessions.
Scheffler fared even worse, taking 1 point.
After Europe lifed the Ryder Cup for a second time in a row in front of a large group of visiting fans on the 1st tee, they marched back across to their team room.
On the way over the bridge, McIlroy and his teammate Matt Fitzpatrick thought they would have a little fun as the European fans continued to cheer.
Egged on by Fitzpatrick, who blew a 5up lead on DeChambeau to finish with a tie in their singles match, McIlroy took the European flag and placed it directly over the American's name.
