Charley Hull reveals hilarious reason for being late to Solheim Cup tee

Charley Hull's Solheim Cup week got off to a typically eventful start after the English star arrived late for her Tuesday practice round at Bernardus Golf.

Hull has already turned heads in the Netherlands after recently swapping her trademark blonde hair for a brunette look, but it was her lateness to the 1st tee that provided the biggest talking point on Tuesday morning.

The 30-year-old was supposed to be on the 1st tee alongside her European teammates including Lottie Woad, but when the group got underway, she was nowhere to be seen.

By the time Hull reached the tee box, her playing partners had already teed off two minutes earlier and were down the middle of the fairway. 

Former LET player Sophie Walker, speaking on Sky Sports' coverage, explained the unusual situation as Hull prepared to play her opening shot during her Tuesday practice round at the Solheim Cup. 

“Charley Hull is at the tee box by herself because her group has teed off two minutes ahead of her, so she's catching them up now,” Walker said, in a video you can watch below. 

Hull then provided the reason for her tardiness – and it was exactly the sort of explanation you might expect from one of golf's more colourful characters.

After sending her opening drive down the fairway, Hull was heard laughing as she told those around her: “We had drinks last night!”

Hull was then seen explaining the situation further as she walked down the fairway alongside European vice-captain Mel Reid.

Thankfully for Hull, this was only a Tuesday practice round. 

She quickly caught up with her teammates and appeared to be in high spirits despite her slightly late start.

Captain Anna Nordqvist, who spoke exclusively to GolfMagic last week, also saw the funny side of it.

Hull is one of the biggest names on Nordqvist's European team and is preparing to make her eighth Solheim Cup appearance.

She first represented Europe at the event aged just 17 and has since become one of the competition's most experienced players. 

Hull has also been part of three victorious European teams and has the most match wins of any player competing in this year's contest.

Now ranked eighth in the world, Hull will be expected to play a major role as Europe attempt to wrestle the trophy back from defending champions Team USA, led by Angela Stanford.

With a new brunette look, a few drinks already enjoyed and an alarm clock apparently not quite doing its job, Hull's Solheim Cup week has certainly started in memorable fashion.
