Rory McIlroy delivered an emotional victory speech on the 18th green after securing a historic triumph at the 2026 Masters Tournament, fighting back tears as he reflected on family, legacy and another milestone in his glittering career.

The 36-year-old world number two carded a composed final-round 71 to finish at 12-under par, edging out world number one Scottie Scheffler by a single shot in a gripping Sunday showdown.

McIlroy’s victory sees him become just the fourth player to successfully defend the Masters title, joining fellow golf greats Jack Nicklaus (1966), Nick Faldo (1990) and Tiger Woods (2002).

It also marks his sixth major championship, drawing him level with Faldo as the second-most successful European male golfer in major history, behind only Harry Vardon (seven).

As McIlroy slipped into his second Green Jacket, he took to the podium on the 18th green and began by thanking Augusta National and chairman Fred Ridley for staging the season’s first major.

But it was when he turned his attention to family that the magnitude of the moment truly hit.

Looking towards the gallery, McIlroy’s voice faltered as he paid tribute to his wife Erica and daughter Poppy, who had walked every step with him during the week.

“They have to put up with me at home — and trust me, sometimes that’s not easy,” he said with a smile.

“But they’ve been my biggest supporters. This has definitely become Poppy’s favourite week of the year. I don't know if it's because of the Par 3 Tournament or because it's the all you can eat ice cream in the players services building..."

He then turned to his parents, Rosie and Gerry, who were watching on beside Erica and Poppy — a particularly poignant moment given his mother and father were unable to attend his 2025 Masters victory that secured him the career Grand Slam.

McIlroy struggled to hold back tears as he spoke about their influence.

“I had to convince them to come this year because they thought the reason I won last time was because they weren’t here,” he said.

“I’m glad we proved that wrong. Mum and dad, I owe everything to you. You are the most wonderful parents. If I can be half the parent to Poppy as you were to me, then I know I’ve done a good job.”

The Northern Irishman then acknowledged his wider team, including long-time caddie and close friend Harry, joking that the No.1 on his caddie’s bib “looked pretty good” and should be kept for next year.

“I can’t wait to celebrate with you all tonight,” he added.

Reflecting on his achievement, McIlroy admitted the significance of joining an exclusive club of back-to-back Masters champions.

“I’m so honoured and thrilled to be able to win this for a second time,” he said. “I can’t wait to come back next year and for many years to come.”

With six majors to his name, including two Masters titles, along with 30 PGA Tour titles and 21 on the DP World Tour, it is now widely considered by analysts and fans that McIlroy is the greatest European golfer of all time.
