Justin Rose lamented mistakes around Amen Corner after he endured another heartbreak at the Masters

The Englishman began the final round of the first men's major of the year three behind leaders Rory McIlroy and Cameron Young.

After the Northern Irishman stuttered, Rose held the lead heading to the 11th tee box.

He raced out of the blocks, chipping in at the first hole and adding four more birdies from the fifth.

The stretch of holes also included an otherworldly approach to the par-four seventh, with Rose hitting his second shot from the pine straw to a matter of inches.

But he came unstuck around the world's most challenging stretch of holes and couldn't recover as another Masters slipped through his fingers.

Rose dropped shots on 11 and 12 and could only manage a five at the 13th, despite finding the green in two shots.

A final-round 70 left Rose in a share of third place alongside Americans Young and Russell Henley.

Twelve months ago, Rose was defeated by McIlroy in a sudden-death playoff. Sergio Garcia also got the better of him in 2017.

"Just a chance that got away obviously," Rose told reporters what his thoughts were as he walked up the 18th.

"I was by no means kind of free and clear and was nowhere kind of close to having the job done but I was right in position.

"I was really in control, the first 10 holes I felt like I was and the mentality was to run through the finish line not just try and get it done.

"I was playing great but just momentum shifted for me around the Amen Corner. That three-putt (on 13) was untimely for sure."

Rose added: "I feel like with a sudden-death loss [last year] you kind of know you got to the house. You’ve done everything it took to win, then it comes down to flick of a coin at times.

"Whereas today I felt there was an opportunity to do better, so obviously that is frustrating for sure."

Rose received a warm reception from the patrons but he believed it was more out of sympathy.

"It was still nonetheless very beautiful," said Rose. "But, yeah, another little stinger, yeah."

Rose has enjoyed a career resurgence in recent years.

He opted not to join the lucrative LIV Golf League as he still harboured aspirations to represent Europe in the Ryder Cup and compete in the major championships.

Rose has played a starring role in Europe's victories in Italy and Bethpage Black.

As well as his runner-up finish to McIlroy last April, Rose finished in a share for second at the 2024 Open Championship held at Royal Troon.

"These are the tournaments I focus on," Rose said.

"These are the tournaments why I practice. These are the tournaments that get me going that sort of extra mile to sort of have to show up and keep being in these great arenas is kind of why I practice."

Asked if he believes he will have more chances to win a green jacket, Rose pointed to the longevity of Bernhard Langer and Fred Couples.

"It does show this course maybe more than anywhere suits maybe personal style or knowledge or whatever it might be.

"But, yeah, I hope so, yeah."
