Justin Rose makes curious decision ahead of The Open

England's Justin Rose has decided against participating in the Genesis Scottish Open ahead of making the trip to Royal Birkdale ahead of the final men's major of the year.

England's Justin Rose has decided to skip this year's Genesis Scottish Open.

The 45-year-old was a notable absentee as tournament organisers confirmed the full field on Friday evening for the DP World Tour event.

The tournament, which is one of five Rolex Series events on the schedule, is being staged at The Renaissance Club over 9-12 July.

Crucially, it falls a week before The Open and many players will use the tournament as one last chance to fine-tune their skills on a links course before heading to Royal Birkdale for a last shot at glory.

World number one Scottie Scheffler and reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy are among those taking part.

And they are joined by major winners Wyndham Clark, Matt Fitzpatrick, Brooks Koepka, Shane Lowry, Aaron Rai, Xander Schauffele and Justin Thomas.

America's Chris Gotterup will return to defend his title.

But Rose has decided not to participate, with the 45-year-old missing the tournament for the first time in five years.

Rose has come very close to adding to his sole major championship triumph in recent years.

He finished runner-up to the aforementioned Schauffele at the 2024 Open held at Royal Troon and lost to McIlroy in a sudden-death playoff at the 2025 Masters.

Rose has not yet given a reason for skipping the Genesis Scottish Open, but it is likely a scheduling decision, with the European Ryder Cup star potentially opting to avoid playing four consecutive weeks.

There are also several LIV Golf players taking part in the Genesis Scottish Open.

Spain's Jon Rahm returns to action for the first time since missing the cut at the U.S. Open.

The Genesis Scottish Open is co-sanctioned with the PGA Tour and, despite being banned from the North American circuit, Rahm is allowed to play as he is a member of the DP World Tour.

It means Rahm will be making his first PGA Tour appearance since the 2023 Tour Championship.

Rahm had been involved in a bitter dispute with DP World Tour officials over the last 18 months over his refusal to pay the fines he racked up for competing in conflicting LIV Golf events.

But the two-time major winner finally backed down and must play five events in 2026 in order to remain eligible for the Ryder Cup.

The Spaniard has also agreed to play at the Irish Open later this year.

Rahm's LIV teammate, Tyrrell Hatton, is also playing next week.

David Puig, Laurie Canter, Tom McKibbin, Adrian Meronk and Victor Perez also among the LIV contingent teeing it up.
