Matthieu Pavon jumped out to an early lead Thursday at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club after firing an impressive 8-under par 63 at the Italian Open on the DP World Tour

Pavon, 30, had an early three-stroke lead after a nearly bogey-free performance at the 2023 Ryder Cup host venue.

He was bogey-free through 16 holes before making a four at the par-3 17th. He made six birdies alone in his front nine.

Pavon has never been named to a European Ryder Cup Team, but he could be making a case for himself this week at Marco Simone.

The Rome-based course is set to host the Ryder Cup in late September.

On Wednesday evening, it was announced LIV Golf's Sergio Garcia, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, and Richard Bland had all resigned their DP World Tour membership, thus ending any chances of participating in the event.

Eamon Lynch, speaking on Golf Channel Thursday, called their exits a "sad day."

"It just becomes more and more apparent that the reality of what these guys now have on LIV is very far from what they were promised at the outset. You know, there's no PGA Tour access, there's no DP World Tour access, there's no World Ranking points, there's no Ryder Cup, no respect. There's really nothing that they're getting other than the cold hard cash."

Robert MacIntyre, the defending champion this week after winning the Italian Open in 2022 in a playoff over Matt Fitzpatrick, was two-over as he neared the end of his round on Thursday.
