Summary: In the PING G25 iron, PING engineers have created a long, forgiving design with exceptional feel and distance control while maintaining a sleeker profile. The high-performance model features progressive sole widths, thinner top lines and moderate offset which will appeal to golfers of all abilities.

Appearance: The non-glare matte grey finish was very welcome with the winter sun beaming down, allowing us to focus on the shot in hand. The sleek, thin topline and moderate offset is a bonus and the overall shape of the club frames the ball beautifully in classic PING style. In comparison to the G-series clubs of years gone by, we prefer the G25’s darkened finish and progressive thick sole, which creates a wider and more appealing club. The soles appear narrower than the G20′s, but they’re still oversized. 4.25 (out of 5)

Feel: The support bars in the cavity stabilise the 17-4 stainless steel face and ensure solid feel and exceptional distance control throughout. The multi-material cavity badge also enhanced sound and feel, and really helped us gain feedback at impact. G25 probably has the best weighted shaft in this test - it feels really easy to swing through the ball. 8.25 (out of 10)

Performance: PING’s Custom Tuning Port (CTP) has been repositioned much lower on the face than previous to increase the efficiency of the G25. The 6-iron - the highest loft in this test at 29-degrees - presents unbelievably high launch angles, while the thinner face offered plenty of forgiveness during a few scuffy ones. The 6-iron was about as easy to launch as a wedge. The springiness off the face felt pretty similar to its predecessors with little gain in yardage. One small criticism of the G25 when playing with it out on the course is that the clubhead does tend to snag in the rough. 8.5 (out of 10)

Verdict: G25 is the best game improvement iron in PING’s history. Although the G25 iron doesn’t crave distance like some of the others in this test, we can see the G25 appealing to a wide range of golfers looking for high, penetrating strikes with forgiveness in abundance. The G25 could quite easily go in the bag of a single-figure handicapper. 21 (out of 25)
