Best Wedges 2020 Showcase

Wedges are important weapons to add to your arsenal and if you can master your short game, you're going to shoot some very low scores out on the course.

The most important factor when considering a new wedge is feel. It doesn't matter how fancy they look or what technology they feature, if it doesn't feel right in your hands it's not the club for you, sort of like Harry Potter choosing his wand.

That being said, modern wedges are packed with incredible technology that we didn't think would be possible 10 years ago and you're spoilt for choice if you're looking at buying a new one.

So let's take a look at some of GolfMagic's favourite wedges on the market in 2020.

TaylorMade MG2

Similar to its predecessor and also found in the new P·7TW irons is the company’s proven CNC milling technology, which allows for the production of wedges to exacting specifications; each leading edge and sole grind is individually CNC milled for unparalleled accuracy and consistency from club to club and grind to grind. This process faithfully reproduces the master design of the surfaces most impactful on the performance of the wedge.

Something unique to the MG2 wedges is the new raw face design, that doesn't start to develop until you remove the air-tight seal that covers the face. A raw face produces a more precise geometry to optimise spin and feel, while it also stops the sun from glaring off the club face.
ZTP Raw Grooves offer sharper, deeper and narrower grooves and a sharper radius, which further combined with a rougher surface from the laser etching between the grooves, enable the golfer to create more friction between the clubface and the ball generating more greenside spin.

When we tested the TaylorMade MG2 wedges, they proved to be one of the best we've ever used and it was no suprise given the success of the first Milled Grind wedge.

The new raw face design is a true highlight of this wedge, watching the rust develop over time and providing you with unrivalled spin control, plus its ability to stop the sun glaring off the face is another positive.

The different colourways available are fantastic, standing out amongst the crowd but without going over the top.

In terms of performance, the level of spin is incredible and most of all consistent, which allows you to play a variety of different shots with the MG2 wedges, making them extremely versatile.

You can also customise your MG2 wedges using TaylorMade's MyMG2 programme, which makes your wedge that little bit more personal.

Callaway Jaws Mack Daddy 5

The JAWS MD5 features Callaway's proprietary new JAWS groove designed to a 37º wall angle, an extreme difference vs. the 5º used in MD4. This elevates the groove-edge sharpness to a new level, for maximum grip and spin from all types of lies. JAWS grooves are particularly effective from 80 yards and in, producing a player preferred “one hop and stop” trajectory.

JAWS MD5 also incorporates Callaway's proven Groove-In-Groove Technology. These milled Micro-Positive grooves are placed in the flat parts of the face for added surface roughness and grip. Three raised micro-ridges are featured between each groove, adding grip to the ball’s cover to increase spin on a variety of shots. This combination of JAWS grooves plus micro-grooves provides 84 different contact points to promote more spin.

The spin rate of the new JAWS MD5 is even better than its previous model and we absolutely loved the trajectory that the new wedges offer with full shots. You could really dial shots at the flag knowing that the ball was going to stop quickly and more importantly, consistently.

What was more impressive was the amount of spin that was being generated out of the rough. Of course it wasn't as controlled as a flushed shot off of the fairway, but you could still be pretty aggressive out of the rough and get a good amount of control.

The design of the JAWS MD5 is very clean and modern, making it very appealing with the ball at address. The offset is also very minimal which increases your confidence around the greens.

Although GolfMagic loves the design, the chrome finish does cause some glare when the sun is shining, so if that's something that puts you off then you may want to lean towards a different colour finish.

Cobra King MIM

The King MIM Wedge Features:
  • MIM Technology Construction
  • Precision CNC Milling & Progressive Spin Technology
  • Versatile Tour Grind & Premium Chrome Finish

This fully 17-4 stainless steel metal injection moulded manufacturing process (MIM) creates precise shaping and thickness tolerances, without the need for any post process hand polishing. This helps to deliver enhanced performance and feel in a speciality wedge.

The wedge has been manufactured with precise CNC milling usually found in more expensive forged players irons, which changes the way you play the game. This precise groove and perfectly flat face manufacturing process provide greater spin and trajectory control, to give you a game improvement iron with a Tour-level performance.

The Cobra King MIM wedge is in our opinion one of the best looking wedges money can buy, but it doesn't stop there.

In terms of performance, the MIM wedge produces a very high ball flight with top-of-the-range spin control.

At contact, the MIM wedge has a very soft feel which fills you with the confidence to play a range of different shots around the green.

Ping Glide 3.0

In the Glide 3.0 wedges, PING’s engineers put a premium on the feel and forgiveness by leveraging the multi-material construction that combines a 431 stainless steel head with a larger and softer elastomer Custom Tuning Port (CTP) insert.

Similar to the popular i210 irons, the additional volume of the CTP allows for a larger insert covering more of the back of the face, resulting in activation of the elastomer at impact to produce a soft yet solid feel. The new, patented cavity design and larger CTP expand the perimeter weighting to increase the MOI and position the centre of gravity higher to yield lower-launching, higher-spinning trajectories for more control.

Patented wheel-cut grooves developed by PING’s engineering and manufacturing teams enable grooves with a sharper edge radius, which increases interaction with the ball at impact, creating more friction for improved spin and trajectory control. The grooves in the lower-lofted wedges (46°, 50° & 52°) are milled with a 20° sidewall and a .005" edge radius for optimal full-shot performance.
The higher-lofted versions (54°, 56°, 58° & 60°) feature an extra 1/2 groove at the bottom of the face for added spin and are milled to a .004" edge radius with a 28° sidewall to impart more spin, especially around the greens.

The PING Glide 3.0 wedges are phenomenal and ticks off every box in the wedge checklist. To put it simply, they look incredible and they perform even better.

The performance levels of the Glide 3.0 wedges were second to none. You get a slightly lower ball flight, so if it's just height you're looking for in a wedge then these might not be for you, but the difference isn't that noticeable.

The forgiveness levels make these wedges even more attractive. PING say that there's a 5% higher MOI than the previous model, the Glide 2.0, and you can really notice that.

Extremely high spinning which makes control around the greens a lot more comfortable. Playing full shots, you get a really quick stop, which makes distance control a lot easier. Around the greens you can play a lot of different types of shots due to the amount of spin they produce.

With four different sole designs available, you can tailor the Glide 3.0 wedges to suit your game, something that not all brands can offer without custom fitting.

Wilson Staff Model Hi-Toe Wedge

Wilson Staff Model HT wedges combine a high toe and wide sole with carbon steel heads and a precision-milled face to give elite players enhanced shotmaking capabilities.
The high-toe design gives you the flexibility you demand while allowing you to save shots as you approach the green. The face shape and sole allow the club to be played at varying degrees of open or closed configurations, giving you completed control over the amount of face that contacts the ball.
Machine-engraved score lines in the precision-milled face feature a higher density pattern for more consistent contact with the ball. The result is maximum spin and control on every shot.

The best value for money wedge that money can buy.

Extremely versatile and forgiving, combined with the high-toe design that allows you to play multiple different shots around the green.

In terms of looks, we absolutely love this wedge, it's clean, modern and simple yet elegant.

Mizuno T20

The T20 Wedge Features:
  • Select 1025E Mild Carbon Steel
  • Grain Flow Forged HD
  • Precision CNC Milled & Hydroflow Micro Grooves

Each wedge is constructed from 1025E Mild Carbon steel and expertly Grain Flow Forged. A 50-year-old process which perfectly suits wedges like no other.

The wedge is spin weighted, weighting placed high into the design within a tapered blade. This improves spin and vertical stability from miss-hit shots. After the forging process, every wedge is mechanically milled to the tightest possible degree of tolerance for a perfectly flat face, which improves spin constancy.

T20 wedges feature CNC milled grooves which are wider and shallower in the higher lofts for partial shots around the green, and deeper and narrower in the lower lofted wedges for more control on full shots. For extra control, the wedges have Hydroflow micro-grooves which are vertically etched onto the face to disperse water more effectively for greater control in damp or wet conditions.

Easily one of the best looking wedges on the market and in terms of performance, you won't be let down by the Mizuno T20.

Extremely forgiving and the feel is amazing, as you'd expect from any Mizuno club.

Cleveland RTX-4

Cleveland Golf have developed the RTX 4 wedge to provide the ultimate Tour performance, built to provide more spin and versatility, in a tour-driven compact shape.

The RTX 4 Wedge Features:

  • Rotex Face Technology (4th Generation)
  • Tour-Developed Shaping & Tour Grinds
  • Feel Balancing Technology

To give you the most short game control, the wedge features a 4th generation Rotex Face. This most aggressive face milling and sharper groove pattern provides even more spin and stopping power than ever before.

This wedge features a new generation of Feel Balancing Technology which places the centre of gravity even closer to the face of the wedge, which decreases vibration and stabilizes the club head more at the point of impact, providing an even better feel.

The compact blade shaping has been inspired by the golf tour, with less offset to provide more versatility preferred by better players. Lower lofts are more compact with straight leading edge, to blend with your short irons, the higher lofted have been developed with a traditional shape for chip and pitches around the greens.

Cleveland has always been a brand that builds fantastic wedges and the RTX-4 is one of the best wedges you should consider if you're looking for a new wedge.

Everything about this wedge is incredible; design, looks, performance, feel, it's got it all.
