It's rarely a quiet year on tour when you're Rory McIlroy, but even by the Northern Irishman's lofty standards, he's had a heck of a 2025.

With his historic, emotional triumph at The Masters in April, McIlroy became just the sixth player in the modern era to complete the career grand slam, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus and fellow TaylorMade staff player Tiger Woods

With a Ryder Cup approaching, McIlroy's fortunes since then have been somewhat mixed—the Ulsterman finding himself broadly in contention at all three of the additional majors this year, but never quite able to challenge the top of the leaderboard.

His form has remained consistently impressive, however, and he has entered the Ryder Cup run-in in particularly fine fettle, making yet more headlines by sinking a dramatic 72nd hole eagle en route to victory at the weekend's Irish Open.

As perhaps the most popular active player on tour right now, Rory's bag and choice of equipment comes under perhaps more scrutiny than any other major name in world golf. When he switches clubs, balls or even shafts, it tends to make headlines. Likewise, his general hesitancy to adopt new clubs unless he's 100% happy with them tends to lead to much speculation among pundits.

But with McIlroy having made a number of recent changes and seemingly back in white-hot form, we thought it high time to revisit the world number 2's bag for a proper deep dive into what he's using.

Driver & Woods: TaylorMade Qi10

The story of Rory's journey towards TaylorMade's most recent driver is far from a straightforward one. Hesitant to let go of the Qi10 woods that served him so well throughout 2024, McIlroy had last season's driver in the bag until mid-way through the season this year, winning The Masters with it and carrying the model throughout the PGA Championship as well (where he was notably forced to use his backup after his regular driver was found to be non-conforming).

Only on the week of the RBC Canadian Open did McIlroy finally make the switch TaylorMade were presumably long hoping he'd make - putting a full suite of Qi35 woods in the bag for both that week's tournament. After missing the cut, however, he switched back to the Qi10 family for the following week's US Open, and despite his noted struggles with driver accuracy this season, continues to use them to this day.

The TaylorMade Qi35 Driver was voted No.1 in our Best Golf Drivers test this season, while the Qi35 Fairway Woods also performed admirably in our Best Fairway Woods test, but with the Ryder Cup approaching and TaylorMade's new driver release scheduled sometime towards the end of the year, it seems unlikely we'll see Rory re-adopt the Qi35 family any time soon.

Irons: TaylorMade P-Series Proto

McIlroy holds a standing in the TaylorMade staff team only matched by players like Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler, meaning his clubs aren't just customised to suit his game: they're fashioned from the ground-up specifically for him. In fact, Rory is one of the only players on tour to play a model, affectionally dubbed the RORS PROTO, that remain broadly unavailable for general purchase (however they do hit the market in limited batches from time to time).

Similar in build and profile to the P7MB, the Rors Protos have a distinctly small, sleek build for ultimate workability, and are forged from 1025 carbon steel for a feel like no other. Gaming the Rors Protos from a 5 to a 9-iron, he also continues to use an older TaylorMade P760 4-iron as a reliable option off the tee.

Wedges: TaylorMade MG5

One new TaylorMade release Rory has been enthusiastic in adopting is the TaylorMade MG5 family of wedges, which released last month and have already found their way into the Northern Irishman's bag. As the first fully-forged wedges ever released in TaylorMade's signature wedge line, the MG5s are already earning plaudits for their enhanced feel and exceptional workability around the greens.

Eschewing a pitching wedge, McIlroy uses four MG5 wedges starting at a 46 degree loft, working all the way up to a 60 degree lob wedge (which McIlroy famously has bent to a 61 degree lie).

Putter: TaylorMade Spider Tour X 'Small Slant'

Already one of the most iconic putter pairings on Tour, Rory and his TaylorMade Spider created a moment for the ages at Sunday's Irish Open final round, holing an incredible 28-foot eagle putt at the 18th to force a playoff and eventually win on the third playoff hole.

The Irish made for one of Rory's most prolific weekends ever with the putter, and the Spider came alive when he needed it most—McIlroy's final day charge to the top of the leaderboard included 160 feet of holed putts.

Rory's Spider build is a fairly conventional one—McIlroy opting for the company's pure roll insert, a small slant neck and a torched black and blue finish. The small slant neck aims to combine the performance of a blade with the benefits of a mallet design, with the weights positioned further forward to increase toe hang while maintaining MOI.

The package is finished off with a SuperStroke Zenergy Pistol Tour grip.

Golf Ball: TaylorMade TP5

McIlroy made headlines early this season reverting back to the TaylorMade TP5 from the TP5x ball he had previously gamed for years—the brand citing the model's slightly lower ball flight and Rory's preference for a slightly softer feel as the reason he made the switch.
