Augusta National asks local schools to consider fall break
The Masters looks ahead to a potential November tournament...
Aiken County Public Schools has revealed Augusta National Golf Club has requested the district to consider the possibility of a fall break in November to coincide with the rescheduled Masters Tournament.
The Masters was initially due to take place last week but was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, but it has now been pushed back to November 12 to 15 in the schedule.
The famous golf tournament, which first began in 1934, has typically relied on thousands of area high school students as temp workers during the staging of the event at Augusta National.
It has also relied on families leaving town on vacation to provide short-term home rentals for tournament patrons.
"Our desire is to be as accommodating as possible to our community partners and to provide our employees and students opportunities to be a part of working and or participating in this annual event," said Merry Glenne Piccolino, the school system’s communications director.
The Masters was last year famously won by Tiger Woods, who landed his 15th career major title and fifth career green jacket.
"We want to emphasize that our future plans are incumbent upon favorable counsel and direction from health officials," said Augusta National Golf Club chairman Fred Ridley.
"Provided that occurs and we can conduct the 2020 Masters, we intend to invite those professionals and amateurs who would have qualified for our original April date and welcome all existing ticket holders to enjoy the excitement of Masters week."
