'I think at this point I don't care...' Rory McIlroy makes shock admission about PGA Tour

Rory McIlroy believes stepping away from the PGA Tour board has had a direct influence on him already winning three times including The Masters in 2025.

Rory McIlroy has revealed he has "no idea what's going on" at the PGA Tour right now, and quite frankly he doesn't even care.

McIlroy, 36, admitted after the second round of the $20m Truist Championship to being able to fully focus on his golf game now that he no longer serves on the board of directors at the PGA Tour

The Northern Irishman first joined the Player Advisory Council in 2019.

He then served on the policy board from 2021 through to the end of the 2024 season.

BREAKING:

Gone are the days of McIlroy having to worry about all things PGA Tour vs LIV Golf, working with the PIF, the structure of the Signature Events, or even what changes are needed to be made to improve the FedEx Cup finale at the Tour Championship in September.

None of that is McIlroy's business anymore.

He just wants to play good golf, and it shows...

McIlroy stepped away from his lead player role on the board of the directors at the PGA Tour in November 2024.

And ever since then, McIlroy has looked much more like himself on the fairways.

Immediately after stepping away from the PGA Tour board, the World No.2 clinched the DP World Tour Championship to land a sixth Race to Dubai title on the former European Tour.

McIlroy then rung in the New Year before going on to win for the first ever time at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February.

A month later, the Ulsterman won the PGA Tour's flaghsip event, The Players Championship, for a second time in his career.

McIlroy then finally slipped on the coveted Green Jacket for the first ever time at The Masters in April to become just the sixth player in the history of the men's game to complete the career grand slam.

That victory also cut a near 11-year winless streak in the majors.

Rory McIlroy thinks he has a clearer mind on the PGA Tour in 2025

One reporter posed to the five-time major champion after the second round at the Truist Championship whether he considers he now has a clearer mind on the golf course as a result of no longer needing to worry about all things PGA Tour since he’s no longer on the board.

"I think so," agreed McIlroy, who revealed he has absolutely no idea what's going on behind closed doors at the PGA Tour right now.

"I'm certainly not involved too much in the politics of everything, and even just not being involved with even the -- you know, being on the board of this Tour and just talking about changes to the Tour Championship and all that, like I have no idea what's going on. I think at this point, I don't care.

"I want to play golf, and the reason I got into this game was to shoot scores and try to play the best golf possible and not really be concerned about how the Tour is run or the business of the Tour.

"It was good to do it. It was a great experience. But I'm happy with where I'm at right now."

McIlroy finds himself five shots behind heading into the weekend in his title defence at the Truist Championship, the sixth of eight Signature Events on the PGA Tour.

Keith Mitchell holds a one-shot lead over Shane Lowry at the top of the leaderboard.
