Phil Mickelson's return to the PGA Tour may be pushed back until February after undergoing a second sports hernia surgery.

The five-time major champion had his initial procedure in mid-October to remove a walnut-sized hernia behind his belly button.

Mickelson, 46, was scheduled to commence his 2017 campaign at the CareerBuilder Challenge from January 19, but he may be forced to skip the tournament depending on his recovery.

Lefty ranks ninth in all-time PGA Tour wins (42) and last won on Tour at the 2013 Open Championship.

Mickelson will be going in search of the career Grand Slam at the US Open having won three Masters titles, an Open and US PGA.
