Rory McIlroy to miss BMW PGA at Wentworth

Rory McIlroy has decided to pull out of next week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth due to a recurrence of his rib injury from earlier this season

McIlroy, 28, was treated for a stress fracture to his ribs back in January but once again felt discomfort during last week's Players Championship despite playing all four rounds.

The world number two has taken doctor's orders and withdrawn from the European Tour's flagship event of the year and will now concentrate on being fit enough to play in next month's US Open at Erin Hills from June 15 to 18.

"I have been advised to take a conservative approach to my recovery," said McIlroy, who won the BMW PGA in 2014.

"It is disappointing, but I have to ensure I make a full recovery."

McIlroy, who first experienced his rib pain from testing just about every new golf club on the market in the off-season, last week signed a 10-year equipment deal with TaylorMade.

The Northern Irishman has played in six tournaments in 2017 and finished in the top 10 on four occasions but remains the year without a victory.
