Tiger Woods earns almost 10 TIMES less than Lionel Messi

The highest paid golfer in the world earns almost ten times less per year than the top earning football player, according to a new tool.

Tiger Woods earns almost 10 TIMES less than Lionel Messi

UK-based Online Mortgage Advisor released its Footy 100 tool to highlight how much footballers across different leagues are paid, as well as comparing their earnings to other sports stars, including golf.

In its In the Pocket section, the tool reveals that football player Lionel Messi is the highest paid sports star in the world. The highest paid golfer, however, is Tiger Woods, who is down in sixth place.

Messi made a staggering £70m/$91m in salary alone in 2019, compared to Woods’ £7.5m/$9.7m. Taking Messi’s endorsement earnings into account bumps him up to a combined wage of £97m/$126m per year.

Woods also benefits from a high sponsorship salary, which adds £41m/$53m to his annual earnings, bringing his total to £48.5m/$63m. This is likely the reason he remains the highest paid player in the sport.

Nevertheless, the tool highlights the disparity in earnings across all sports, with footballers storming ahead.

Using the tool, you can find out quite how high footballers’ salaries are, by comparing how many houses they could buy in a year, month, or even week. There is a stark contrast across the leagues, including quite a drop for female footballers.

You can also see how you compare, by calculating how long it would take you to save up for a deposit and pay off a mortgage on the highest earning sports star’s home.

Woods is teeing up in this week's Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, which has attracted one of the best fields of the PGA Tour season so far with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Brooks Koepka also teeing it up.
