Rory McIlroy: swing sequence

What you can learn from the rhythm, poise and power of Rory McIlroy's swing

Rory McIlroy: swing sequence

Check how Rory is bent forwards from the hips with just a little knee flex. Also note how the club shaft points through his belt.

Copy Rory McIlroy's textbook moves to improve your own swing, says PGA Advanced Fellow Ian Clark

1. Check how Rory is bent forwards from the hips with just a little knee flex. Also note how the club shaft points through his belt.

2. With the club parallel to the ground, Rory's right arm is still comfortably straight and the club head is in line with his hands. Perfect.

3. You would do well to copy this position - club shaft pointing at the ball-to-target line. That's on plane.

4. See how Rory's left arm matches the line of his shoulders, and how a line drawn straight down from the end of the handle points to his heel.

5. Full speed ahead. With his left arm still across his chest, Rory is ensuring that the club will approach the ball from inside the target line.

6. Look at how the club shaft is in line with his right forearm, the right foot is still close to the ground, and there is a little bend in both knees.

7. The moment of truth. Right forearm below the left arm indicates an inside approach to the ball. See also how Rory's hips are slightly more open than his upper body.

8. A thing of beauty. Note the fully extended right arm and the right foot still close to the floor.

9. The golf club has reappeared through the left shoulder, which is perfect. Look at that right foot, too, it looks so stable.

10. When the shaft and neck meet, the swing is complete. Rory's power is largely created by delivering the golf club to the ball in an efficient manner, with the club on the right path, and the ball hit from the centre of the clubface.
