Toughest Golf Shots: fairway bunker

The fairway bunker shot is our first bunker play article in the Golf's Toughest Bunker Shots series.

Fairway bunkers are lurking off the tee on most holes and inevitably you're going to end up in one during a round. So how do you hit out confidently?

Four-time major champion Phil Mickleson has great feel in the sand, so who better to show us a simple technique for getting out the fairway trap.

Shallower swing path: It's always tempting to try and dig the ball out with a steep swing. Phil suggests having a shallower swing and firm wrists will allow you to flick the ball off the top of the sand so it doesn't sink at impact.
