Europe retain Solheim Cup with 14-14 tie on dramatic final day in Spain
Suzann Pettersen's Team Europe retained the Solheim Cup after a dramatic final day in Spain against Stacy Lewis' Team USA.
Caroline Hedwall, Leona Maguire and Carlota Ciganda starred as Europe retained the Solheim Cup with a 14-14 tie against Team USA on a dramatic final day in Spain.
Suzann Pettersen's Europe entered the Sunday singles all tied at 8-8 after being on the back foot for the majority of the contest.
Europe were drubbed 4-0 in the opening session but fought back to trail by two points on Friday evening.
Saturday's morning session finished 2-2 but Europe won the afternoon fourballs 3-1 to set up a tantalising final day.
Both teams couldn't be separated on Sunday, with Europe and Team USA winning five matches each. Two matches were tied.
In the end, the 14-14 score meant that Europe retained the Solheim Cup.
"We got off to a rough start," an emotional Pettersen said with tears in her eyes. "But we didn't look back. The sky was the limit."
Undoubtedly, the stars of the final day were Ireland's Maguire, Swede Hedwall and home favourite Ciganda.
Maguire drubbed rising LPGA Tour superstar Rose Zhang 4&3. Her Solheim Cup record now stands at 7-1-1 in two appearances.
Elsewhere, Hedwall came from behind to defeat Ally Ewing. She was benched until Saturday evening and had a point to prove.
Ciganda was pitted against World No.1 Nelly Korda and hit darts at Finca Cortesin's 17th and 18th to claim a vital point.
Europe had the opportunity to win the Cup outright but Lexi Thompson defeated Emily Pederson 2&1 in the anchor match.
