Nike goes for the 'Mach Black' driver

Black is the new, preferred colour for drivers in 2011 with Nike Golf announcing 'round' and 'square' versions of its SQ Machspeed Black driver for men and women. All four models have a recommended price of £240.

Titleist earlier announced its black-headed 910D2 and 910D3 drivers, with Callaway revealing its Diablo Octane Black and Diablo Octane Black Tour drivers.

Nike says it's also capitalising on the power of aerodynamics found in the Nike SQ MMachspeed driver it released last Spring, by 'taking aerodynamics efficiency to the next level'.

The drivers will be available to buy in November 2010 and feature 460cc round and square heads- each with a sleek black profile.

This, says Nike, ensures that the air moves quickly and cleanly over the club head to generate faster club head speed by reducing drag. A deeper face allows for the delivery of greater ball speed across the face for greater distance from miss-hits.

The face of the clubhead is tall and but tapers more acutely to enable more forgiveness, differing from its predecessors with a lower ball flight and lower spin.

Says 2009 US Open champion Lucas Glover after testing the new SQ Machspeed Black driver: :It feels like the ball explodes off of the face.”

Both models of SQ Machspeed Black drivers offer Nike’s STR8-FIT technology, which delivers eight face angle options through two degrees open to two degrees closed.

The square version promotes forgiveness and stability, while the round model is aimed is for at demanding more workability and shot shaping. Both drivers come with Mistsubishi Rayons light weight Fubuki shafts.

Loft options for men are 8.5 (RH only), 9.5 (RH/LH), 10.5 (RH/LH), 11.5 (RH) and high launch (RH) in regulkar and stiff flex (8.5 and X flex are custom fit only). Loft for women is HL (RH only) with women's (W) shaft.
