Titleist has taken time off from the imminent launch of the new Pro V1 and Pro V1X ball to explain why dimples are the key to flight.

"If the core is the engine of a golf ball, the dimples are the wings," says Nick Nardacci, Titleist's senior manager of product development - aerodynamics.

Tour players began testing the new balls in October and so far more than 100 professionals have put them in play, with Bubba Watson, Charley Hoffman and Jordan Spieth all tasting victory.

Titleist, which own more than 1,000 golf ball patents, will launch the new balls in January 2015.
