Buick Classic turns out fine for Chris Smith in the end

Chris Smith takes first PGA title

Chris Smith finished two shots ahead in the Buick Classic at the Westchester Country Club, to take his first PGA title.

Previously the best Smith has managed was a tie for third at last year's BellSouth Classic, but here he shot a one-under-par 70 in the final round to finish at 12-under 272, two shots ahead of David Gossett, Pat Perez and Loren Roberts.

At the start of the final round Smith had a one-shot lead over Roberts and Gossett. He made only four of the 14 fairways in that round but hit 14 greens in regulation and totalled 30 putts.

Smith was clearly emotional after his win and said through the last round he'd been trying his best just to hit it as smoothly as possible and make the fairway as he felt his putting was on form.
