Angel Cabrera was arrested in Brazil on Thursday for extradition to Argentina and faces charges of assault, theft, illegal intimidation and repeated disrespect to authorities, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The two-time major winner won the 2007 US Open at Oakmont, before adding a green jacket to his list of accomplishments two years later at the 2009 Masters Championship.

Cabrera, 51, was on Interpol's "red code" list, used to seek and arrest those who are wanted by a legal jurisdiction or an international tribunal with a view to his or her extradition.

It had been reported by the Argentine media at the start of the new year that Cabrera was on the run from his homeland after his former wife filed two charges against him and another former partner claimed Cabrera had punched her, threatened her and attemped to run her down with his car.

Further reports from Clarín - the most read newspaper in Argentina - say that two other women from Cabrera's past have accused him of "beatings and threats."

According to the Associated Press, the federal police in Brazil made the arrest in an upper class area of Rio de Janeiro and while Cabrera's name was not announced at the time, two police officers have now confirmed it was the former golf star who was arrested.

As a former Masters champion, Cabrera is invited to play in the event at Augusta National every year but missed the 2020 tournament citing a wrist injury.

Last year, the Argentine made nine starts on the PGA Champions Tour and he withdrew from his last event, the PURE Insurance Championship at Pebble Beach, where Jim Furyk went on to win.
