Tyrrell Hatton wins dramatic Turkish Airlines Open
Tyrrell Hatton won a six-man playoff to take home the Turkish Airlines Open.
In one of the most dramatic final days the European Tour has ever seen, it was Tyrrell Hatton who came out on top on Sunday, winning a six-man playoff on the fourth extra hole to take home the Turkish Airlines Open.
Six players finished the tournament at 20-under par, Englishman Hatton, Austrian Matthias Schwab, French duo Victor Perez and Benjamin Hebert, America's Kurt Kitayama and South African Erik van Rooyen.
Perez, Hebert and van Rooyen were all eliminated from the playoff after the first extra hole, while Kitayama lost out after the third, leaving Hatton and Schwab to battle it out under floodlights on the par-5 18th hole for a fourth time.
It looked as though Hatton was set to win it at the third extra hole, leaving his approach shot just a few feet short, but a brilliant putt from Schwab saw the Austrian snatch a birdie to tee it up with Hatton once again.
At the fourth extra hole, Hatton had a birdie putt to win it, but narrowly missed to his frustration. Schwab was just a few feet from the hole and needed to sink his par putt to force a fifth extra hole, but to the crowd and Hatton's surprise, the 24-year-old missed the putt, handing the win to Hatton.
It was Hatton's fourth win on the European Tour, his last coming at the 2017 Italian Open, helping him take a huge climb in the Race to Dubai rankings, leaving him in sixth place.
There was a lot of money to play for at the Montgomerie Maxx Royal course, with Hatton taking home the winner's share of $2 million (£1.56). Victory for Hatton also ensured he will play in next year's Masters tournament, as he solidified his place inside the world's top 50.
"I can't believe I've won," he told Sky Sports. "It's been quite a difficult year with some things off the course but I really found my game in the last month.
"It's easy to take things for granted in sport but it hits home when it's not going well.
"I said I would really savour it if I won again and I will. I'm absolutely thrilled."
Shot of the day
There were some incredible shots throughout the final round, but the shot of the day and probably the tournament went to Tyrrell Hatton. With the pressure mounted on the first playoff hole, Hatton needed a birdie to stay in the competition and he pulled off this phenomenal chip to do just that...
