Two of the game’s leading brands - Callaway and Srixon – are introducing balls aimed at improving the games of women golfers.

Callaway says its three-piece HX Pearl ball helps increase ball speed from the clubface, while Srixon claims its two-piece Lady Ball produces a higher launch at impact.

The HX Pearl – likely to cost around £22 per dozen - has been developed using the same HEX aerodynamics used in the HX Tour and HX Tour 56 balls, for distance and accuracy.

"Its introduction underscores our commitment to women’s golf," says Callaway Golf’s George Fellows. "Women golfers have told us they want the same high-tech performance balls men play, but they want them to be designed for their style of play. We listened to them and the result is a ball that delivers exceptional distance and soft feel, tee to green."

At the heart of the HX Pearl, says Callaway, is a soft, resilient rubber core with a pearlised finish, giving the ball a lustrous glow making it ‘easier to spot’ on the course.

Srixon Sports says its Lady Ball (£20 a dozen), with a distinctive pink packaging and soft feel at impact, will be in the shops shortly.

It says its higher launch trajectory will deliver greater carry and overall distance for women. It’s designed to perform at it's best with the slower swing speeds that most women have.

Meanwhile Ping is launching a new tournament in association with the English Ladies Golf Association. The Ping Ladies’ Fouball Betterball starts in April, with qualifying rounds at club level, followed by regional finals and a final at Ping’s European HQ at Gainsborough on October 18.

Ping Collection and Ecco will supply shoes and clothing to the 96 golfers who make it through to the final.
