Rory McIlroy has fired yet more shots at the LIV Golf Tour after etching his name on the FedEx Cup for a record third time at East Lake on Sunday.

McIlroy carded a solid 66 in the final round of the Tour Championship, highlighted by a spectacular birdie putt from 30 feet on the par-3 15th, as he went on to land a narrow one-shot victory over World No.1 Scottie Scheffler and Sungjae Im.

It marked the 22nd win of his PGA Tour career and it vaults him to third in the Official World Golf Rankings.

He also pocketed a cool $18 million, taking his season earnings over the $25 million mark, which is a record for one season on the PGA Tour.

After throwing shade at LIV Golf in his immediate victory speech after walking off the 18th green, McIlroy took aim at the 18 LIV Golf players who will be joining him at the BMW PGA Chanpionship at Wentworth next week.

McIlroy then addressed the media about being fortunate to clatter the flagstick with his chip shot from beyond the 16th green.

The Ulsterman flopped the ball up in the air and it took the downslope on the green, struck the pin and ran out to six feet.

He went on to make the par putt while Scheffler made bogey, and it meant McIlroy had assumed the outright lead in the tournament for the first time all week.

When pressed on what unfolded with his chip shot on the 16th hole in the final round, McIlroy gave his response but could not resist a sly dig at LIV Golf at the very end.

"Yeah, it came out a little hot and a little further left than -- a little hot and a little further left than I wanted it to," said McIlroy of his chip shot behind the back of the 16th green.

"With whatever way the green was, it was obviously very lucky to hit the pin, but I thought for -- I was certain it was going to miss the hole on the left-hand side. But just sort of the grain held it and it hit the pin, and it obviously ended up being closer than it would have.

"But I took advantage of that little break with a good putt to make par there, and that was the first time in the whole tournament that I had the outright lead. On the 70th hole is a nice time to take the lead of a golf tournament. Yeah, or the 52nd hole if you play somewhere else."

McIlroy of course is referring to the fact LIV Golf tournaments are staged over 54 holes instead of 72 holes on the PGA Tour.

On top of competing at the BMW PGA on the DP World Tour next week, McIlroy will also be making his debut in the Italian Open the following week. He will also be returning to St Andrews for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship with his father Gerry at the end of the month.
