Need To Know
THREE was very much the (Golf)magic number when we tried out ECCO's latest pair of golf shoes at Hoebridge Golf Club in Surrey last week.
Not only do these shoes as worn by the likes of Henrik Stenson and Erik van Rooyen go by the name of S-THREE, but it was three years ago to the month that I had last worn a pair of ECCO Golf shoes. It also took me until the third hole to realise these are the most comfortable golf shoes I have ever worn.
Blending on-course performance with off-course style, the new S-THREE shoes from ECCO Golf deliver what I now consider to be the most comfortable shoes in golf.
This incredibly soft comfort is achieved by a direct injection innovation known as ZONAL FLUIDFORM TECHNOLOGY, which creates a moulded midsole with three distinct zones of softness to ensure the right balance of cushioning and stability exactly where you need it.
The heel of the midsole is engineered for medium softness to ensure the right amount of cushioning and comfort, while the central part of the midsole has higher levels of rigidity to deliver outstanding lateral stability throughout the swing.
Then the highest level of softness comes in the forefront of the midsole, aiding exceptional walking comfort.
On top of all this, you then have a double layer of neoprene in the collar and heel that provides increased padding for additional wearing comfort throughout the swing, while ECCO FLUIDFORM Direct Comfort Technology ensures a finely-tuned balance of cushioning and rebound.
Other positives are that they are highly breathable and comprise 100% waterproof GORE-TEX technology, which was perfect when the heavens opened on the back nine. The uppers of the S-THREE shoe are crafted from a thick ECCO SOFT CALF NAPPA leather, made in ECCO’s own tanneries.
The traction on full shots was also superb, and also around the green when I needed to feel low to the ground on those delicate wedge shots and flop shots.
This is achieved with the brand's clever DYNAMIC TRACTION SYSTEM (E-DTS) outsole design that provides more than 100 traction bars and 800 traction angles for loads of grip where you need it most.
In terms of colour and style, which is very much a personal preference, the darkened grey look did not look out of place with a pair of navy trousers. I do typically prefer a white or black pair of shoes, as I find those colours easier to match with a choice of outfit.
A little pricey at £180, but as I say, these are the most comfortable golf shoes I have ever worn so it very much depends how much comfort means to you on the golf course. The traction is superb and they are also 100% waterproof, perfect for these unpredictable weather conditions during the summer.
I very much encourage you to check these shoes out - you will not be disappointed. I am too lost in the levels of comfort from this shoe to even consider a negative about it right now.
