First Look

The 588 MT - forming one third of a new family that includes Altitude and Tour Trajectory irons - is all about control.

The centre of gravity is positioned in a more neutral place in the head, while the hollow construction ensures plenty of forgiveness.

Although we were a little sceptical about the look of the giant cavity back and deeper than usual centre of gravity, the MT iron made amends in terms of performance as the advanced internal weighting of the club aided impressive forgiveness and high, towering ball flights strike after strike.

You barely need to put a swing on this club and the ball will fly up off the face.

In terms of feel, we were taken by its forged clubface and multi-material insert of polymer and aluminium at the rear of the head dampened vibration and softened the feel of the strike. The noise of clubhead meeting ball then turf felt consistently crisp.

Engineered for Mid Trajectory, as its name suggests, these easy-to-hit irons feature a constant blade length throughout the set and a blade height that progressively increases in higher-lofted clubs.

Verdict

The 588 MT won’t be winning many accolades in the beauty stakes but who cares if it performs, right? And remember, you can interchange your Cleveland 588 set with super game-improvement Altitude irons and player TT irons forming part of the new range.

When it comes to feel and performance, the MT proved enough here to suggest it is perfect for the mid-to-high handicapper seeking the consistency of high launch and forgiveness.
