Will the equipment switch turn McIlroy on or off in 2013?

Fairway woods

2012: Titleist 913Fd (13.5- and 18-degree)
2013: Nike VR Pro Limited Edition (15- and 19-degree)

Given McIlroy’s prodigious length off the tee, fairway woods are a fundamental part of the Northern Irishman’s game. Not just to ensure he doesn’t run out of fairway off the tee but so he can reach those long par-5s in two when others are forced to lay up.

McIlroy switched to the 913Fd Low Spin proto woods after their launch at the end of 2012 and used them to devastating effect when lifting the Deutsche Bank Championship. Before then, he trusted the older 906F2 because he felt more confident hitting a fade or draw.

For 2013, McIlroy has chosen the Nike VR Pro Limited Edition fairways, launched in 2011, in 15- and 19-degree; 1.5-degree extra loft on his previous 3-wood and 1-degree extra on his 5-wood.

He said: “The woods are versatile and I can play all sorts of shots with them. They’re a great addition to the bag.”

He didn't get off to the best start with them though - as you can see here.

Next up, the irons
