Hard to fault other than price

Odyssey has launched its new Odyssey Works putters for 2015 so we tested out the V-Line Versa at a media event in Marbella.

Odyssey Works putters use a new insert called Fusion RX that combines Odyssey’s famous White Hot insertwith a new 0.406mm stainless steel meshthat is similar to the company’s Metal-X insert.

Flirting with a plethora of new Odyssey Works putters beside the practice green at Odyssey's media event at Los Naranjos Golf Club, I instantly favoured the 350g weight and head profile of the V-Line Versa, 35" with SuperStroke grip.

The putter specialists say the idea behind Odyssey Works was to combine the soft, consistent feel of the "winningest" insert of all-time with the roll benefits of the Metal-X insert pattern.

Essentially, Fusion RX is an extremely thin metal face, like a foil, and Odyssey says this forms a "better mechanical lock" and "pure roll faster" than anything it has designed before.

Now I am skeptical when brands assert things like this, but not Odyssey - the number one putter brand in the world; particularly after plucking my first five Callaway Chrome Soft balls out of the cup from inside six feet.

"Andy, want to try any of our other Odyssey Works putters?"

"I've already tested them," I lied, unprepared to give any of the other golf journos a chance to use this magic wand.

Utilising what Odyssey calls "Dual Alignment with Big T", I have never lined up to the ball with more confidence before on short putts.

I also found the high MOI added superb consistency to my stroke, accentuated by the SuperStroke grip, and distance control on putts outside of 30 feet was as good as it gets.

I have been using the Slim 3.0 SuperStroke grip for a good few months now, and I can safely say I will never be going back to the standard putter grip. Taking all wrist action out the stroke and encouraging a rocking movement with the shoulders is of huge benefit to my game.

Verdict

The V-line is one of the hottest mallets in the professional game, and it is easy to see why.

Not exactly cheap for a putter at £169, if opting for a SuperStroke grip as well, but Odyssey Works V-Line Versa is quite possibly my favourite ever putter.

Well worth a look if you are in the market for a premium mallet for 2015 offering tremendous feel, fantastic alignment for short putts and ideal distance control for long putts.
