Zach Johnson has been blasted by golf fans for appearing to talk Jordan Spieth out of using driver on the par-4 16th during his crucial Ryder Cup fourballs match on Saturday afternoon, only for him to make the change to 3-wood and find the water.
Spieth and his playing partner Justin Thomas were already well up against it in their crunch tie with Justin Rose and Bob MacIntyre as they found themselves 3 down with three holes to play at Marco Simone.
Europe were already in good position with their best ball in Rose up in the greenside bunker on the short par-4 16th.
Thomas hit a solid tee shot down the left side but up by the green in the rough.
Spieth took out his driver and was about to pull the trigger to go pin-seeking, but captain Johnson, who was following their match all the way round, appeared to step in and urge him to change his mind and hit a 3-wood instead.
The three-time major champion switched to a 3-wood under captain's orders.
Spieth went on to find the water.

"Absolutely dumbfounded," multiple PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan said in the commentary box when seeing Johnson apparently tell Spieth to change his mind and drop the driver for the 3-wood on the 16th.
Rose and Thomas both went on to make birdie-threes to halve the hole.
It resulted in Europe winning the match 3&2.
Here's how a number of golf fans reacted:
"Worst captain in US Ryder Cup history."
"OMG that just about sums up Zach Johnson's captaincy this week."
"One of the most bizarre things I have ever seen a captain do in team match play golf. He has failed emphatically."
"What is Zach doing there?!"
"Maybe a microcosm of ZJ's captaincy."
"I cannot believe what I just saw..."
"Is Zach Johnson serious?!"
"Oh wow, that's madness!"
"Kick him off the Tour, Doug."
"Zach Johnson should not be allowed on the golf course on Sunday."
"That moments sums up this USA performance."
"Might go down as the most hated two time major winner."
"They picked the wrong Johnson."
"ZJ should be on the plane home tonight."
