Getting your weight shift and sequencing right is crucial to creating the kind of picture-perfect tempo that makes achieving elite clubhead speeds absolutely effortless.

There are, of course countless training aids available to help you with just this, there's a far more simple solution that just about anyone can add into their warm-up or pre-shot routine on the tee.

"If you're not shifting your weight properly, it's impossible for you to get a good strike or create speed," says Kaamil Ryan Bham, resident pro at leading London indoor golf facility TeeGo. "If you're hanging back, you're always going to have your hands flipping through in response. That robs you of compression and forward momentum on the ball."

"What I really like to tell people to do is simply turn your club over and have a few swings using nothing but the shaft. The sound gives instant feedback of when you're generating the most velocity in your swing. You want to hear that "whoosh" just as you're reaching the bottom of the arc."

It's a drill that seems simple at first glance, but requires a deceptive amount that needs to go right as you ramp your speed up. Generating the most speed comes down not just to the transition, but getting your shoulders, elbows and wrists working in harmony as you accelerate through the strike.

"If you hear the whoosh too early, it likely means you're releasing too early", clarifies Kaamil. "If you hear it well after you'd impact the ball, you're likely throwing your energy too far forward."

It's a super simple drill, but here's what you need to do in full order. We prefer using the longest, lightest shaft you have available for this as they produce the most feedback and noise, but whatever you have on hand is fine.

  1. Grab the longest golf club you have available to you (a driver is ideal)
  2. Turn the club upside down and grip it as as you normally would just below the clubhead
  3. Make a series of deliberate swings starting more horizontal (like a baseball swing) and working down to a more vertical plane. Hinging your wrists at the right moment here is key to accelerating through the ball

  1. Aim to hear the "whoosh" of the swing reach its apex at the moment the club would theoretically impact the ball
  2. Rotate through, hinging your elbows to create a compact follow through
