It's a brave effort from Lagergren, but his chip rolls wide and the crowd erupts as Rory McIlroy celebrates his second victory in the Irish Open, nine years after his first at The K Club.
It was no less dramatic this time, and that eagle putt to force the playoff will be replayed countless times for years to come.
McIlroy is in three-putt territory, but he judges it to near-perfection and leaves himself a simple tap-in for birdie.
Lagergren now needs to chip in to extend the playoff
Wow, what a moment at 18 as Lagergren buckles at the wrong time. The Swede is in the middle of the fairway, but he pulls his second and it drops into the drink, to the delight of the home fans.
McIlroy gouges his second from the rough and finds the front-right portion of the green, and he'll have about 60 feet for eagle.
It's another perfect drive from Lagergren down the 18th and he splits the fairway again.
McIlroy comes out of his drive and he finds the rough on the right, but he looks to have drawn a decent lie. He can still go at the green, and he'll have a good angle in.
Pressure? What pressure?
McIlroy is up first and rattles in a confident putt for birdie. But Lagergren is unflappable, and he puts a good stroke on his tricky birdie putt and we're heading back to the 18th tee once again.
McIlroy's long-distance putt is pretty good, but it wanders about five feet past the hole.
Lagergren does the same, and the referee comes out to decide who's got the honour.
It's advantage Lagergren as the two leaders head to the green. The Swede punches a good second to 30 feet, safely to the right of the pin.
McIlroy has 7-iron from 196 yards, but he doesn't catch it cleanly. His ball clears the water, but he'll have about 50 feet for eagle.
The second playoff hole is underway, and it's a big drive from McIlroy. He's in great shape in the middle of the fairway and a few yards ahead of Lagergren, whose drive flirted with the bunkers on the right but kicked out of the rough to the short grass.
We're heading back to the 18th tee after both players make solid birdies.
Lagergren's putt misses left, while McIlroy's just grazes the right lip.
McIlroy up first, hitting 7-iron from 211 yards. It's a good, solid effort and finds the heart of the green - about 25 feet right of the pin.
Lagergren is 20 yards closer, but his second comes up 30 feet short and he'll have a similar putt to the one McIlroy just holed for eagle!
It's advantage Lagergren as the two leaders return to the 18th tee. The Swede has the honour and his drive gets a huge kick forward on landing, and that'll be a short-iron for his second.
McIlroy finds the fairway, but his ball gets a soft bounce and he will have around 200 yards for his second.
Hidalgo -15 (71)
Angel Hidalgo's hopes of making it a three-way playoff are dashed as he blocks his second shot and, although he finds the green, he has 70 feet for eagle.
It's a bold attempt, but it rolls six feet past the hole and he misses the return to finish on 15-under.
We await the playoff ....

McIlroy -17 (66)
WOW! just WOW!
The noise at The K Club right now is just incredible as Rory McIlroy rattles in a sensational eagle putt to tie Lagergren in the house on 17-under.
Hidalgo -15 (17)
Angel Hidalgo does well to find the green from the rough at 17, but the birdie putt is unsuccessful and he'll need eagle at the last to tie Largergren
McIlroy -15 (17)
Excellent drive down the last leaves McIlroy 201 yards to the flag, and a big swish with an 8-iron lands about 25 feet short.
His playing partner, Garcia-Heredia, is about 60 feet away in two, but he's out of the game on 7-under. The 43-year-old is 5-over for the day, but Radar just revealed that the Spaniard is battling a back problem.
Lagergren -17 (66)
Is that the winning putt from Joakim Lagergren? The Swede coaxes his first putt down the slope but it runs out of legs about five feet short.
But his nerve holds and he nails the putt for birdie, capping a brilliant 66 that puts him two shots clear at the top.
Joakim Lagergren birdies the last! 👏

Will it be enough...#AmgenIrishOpenpic.twitter.com/DhO75ztxKO
McIlroy needs eagle at the last to force a playoff, while Hildago is in the trees to the right of the 17th fairway.
McIlroy -15 (17)
Rory McIlroy needs something special on 18 after his 30-foot putt for birdie on the penultimate green fails to drop.
Lagergren, meanwhile, faces a knee-knocker for birdie on the 18th green
The fans may have gone a little quieter with McIlroy one behind down the stretch, but it's been an incredible atmosphere at The K Club ...
Look at the crowd 💚

Hildago -15 (16)
Angel Hildago is still in the hunt, and he's fist-pumping at the 16th after an excellent two-putt from some distance. That's a useful birdie, and he's one back with two to play.
Up at 18, Lagergren finds the green in two, but he's 60 feet from the pin.
Cabrera Bello -15 (67)
It's been a disappointing back-nine after all of Rafa's fireworks on the outward half. The veteran Spaniard pitches to eight feet at the last, but the birdie putt lacks conviction and he has to settle for par.
That's a 67, and he's the new clubhouse leader.
Just a handful of holes remaining now, here's the state of the leaderboard ...
McIlroy -15 (16)
Rory McIlroy has not played the par-5s well today, and that could cost him the title. After pulling his drive at 16, he punches back out only to tug a wedge 30 feet left of the pin.
The birdie putt is good, but a tap-in for par was not what he needed here.
