Irish Open Round 1 Leaderboard: Rory McIlroy remains in contention as LIV Golf's Joaquin Niemann leads

Rory McIlroy remains in contention in his Irish Open title defence after an eventful opening round at Doonbeg, with LIV Golf star Joaquin Niemann setting the pace at the top of the leaderboard.

McIlroy carded a 1-under 69 at Trump International Golf Links & Hotel, Ireland, leaving him four shots behind Niemann after a testing day on the County Clare coast.

The defending champion looked on course for a better score before a costly double bogey at the 13th set him back. 

The World No.2 responded well, however, picking up a birdie late in the round to ensure he finished under par.

“I hung in there, shot under par, and at least don't feel like I'm out of the tournament,” McIlroy said.

And that is probably the fairest assessment. 

A round of 69 is not the fast start McIlroy would have craved, but he remains well within striking distance with three rounds still to play in a tie for 17th. 

“A good day tomorrow gets me right back in it,” he added.

At the top, Niemann produced the standout performance of the opening day.

The Chilean fired a 5-under 65, finishing with a spectacular run of four consecutive birdies from the 14th to move two shots clear of the chasing pack.

His only bogey came at the 12th after a three-putt, but he responded immediately. 

His tee shot at the 14th finished just three feet from the hole, before further birdies at the 15th and 16th set up a strong finish. 

A wedge to two feet at the 17th completed the run.

“It was a lot of fun out there,” Niemann said. 

“It's a really tricky course and a really fun golf course to play, especially with the Irish weather.”

Niemann's performance comes during an intriguing week for LIV Golf. 

The league filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US on Tuesday, although LIV says it intends to restructure and return for the 2027 season. 

The situation has created uncertainty around the futures of several leading players.

Niemann and Jon Rahm are among the LIV stars whose plans will be watched closely, with speculation that some players could pursue fuller DP World Tour schedules next year.

Rahm finished the first round on level par, which positions him in a tie for 35th as it stands. 

Shane Lowry gave the home crowd most to cheer about on Thursday with a solid 3-under 67.

The 2009 Irish Open champion made a flying start with birdies at the 2nd, 4th and 6th before dropping shots at the 7th and 9th. 

Another birdie at the 14th moved him back to 3-under par, leaving him two shots behind Niemann.

“I honestly didn't think we were going to get finished,” Lowry said after a day affected by strong winds and delays. 

“I'm happy with my score.”

South Africa's Shaun Norris also carded a 67, while LIV's Adrian Meronk, Maximilian Steinlechner and Renato Paratore reached 3-under par with several holes still to complete before play was suspended due to darkness. 

LIV Golf's Tyrrell Hatton endured a day to forget, shooting a lacklustre 8-over 78 and leaving himself with a huge task to make the weekend.

The first round will resume at 9am local time on Friday, with second-round tee times remaining unchanged.

For McIlroy, there is work still to do, but his title defence is very much alive.
