Matt Fitzpatrick has compared his Mum's performance en route to Dunhill Links team glory to that of Tiger Woods winning the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines.

Fitzpatrick spoke to the media after sealing a ninth DP World Tour title at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews as well as the team prize alongside his mother, Susan.

The European Ryder Cup star and former US Open champion prevailed in a Monday finish by three strokes on 19-under par in the individual professional tournament, and he also ran away with the team prize alongside his Mum on 35-under par.

Fitzpatrick likened his mother's performance over the three rounds at Carnoustie, Kingsbarns and St Andrews to that of 15-time major champion Woods given she was playing without any cartilage in her knee.

Woods famously won the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines when competing with a double stress fracture and anterior cruciate ligament issues.

After lifting both trophies on the famous Swilcan Bridge on the 18th at St Andrews, Fitzpatrick praised his Mum for playing some fantastic golf with a strapped up knee.

Fitzpatrick said:

"Even with all my wins, aside from a major, you forget about them in the future. But you’ll always remember the one that you won with your Mum, so it doesn’t get better than that."

The Englishman added:

"There’s only one other person that I know who won a big tournament on one leg and that’s Tiger Woods. The likeness is uncanny.
"My Mum's not got any cartilage in her knee, so she was amazing. I know she was in serious, serious pain, so to win was even more impressive."
