LIV Golf jokes about Adelaide becoming ‘Fifth Major’ in tongue-in-cheek broadcast skit
Arlo White and David Feherty playfully crown LIV Golf Adelaide the ‘Fifth Major’, in light of Players Championship speculation.
LIV Golf’s commentary team couldn’t resist poking fun at the growing debate around golf’s so-called “fifth major” — and they did so in typically irreverent style during last week’s event in Australia.
With speculation once again gathering pace that The Players Championship could one day be elevated to official major status, LIV Golf host Arlo White and co-commentator David Feherty delivered a tongue-in-cheek segment suggesting LIV Golf Adelaide should be next in line instead.
The Players, the PGA Tour’s flagship event held annually at TPC Sawgrass, has long been labelled the “unofficial fifth major”. In recent years, and particularly ahead of this year’s March edition, the discussion has intensified over whether it could formally join The Masters, US PGA Championship, US Open and The Open as the game’s fifth major.
However, such a move remains highly unlikely, and many PGA Tour players have previously expressed a preference for The Players to retain its prestigious standalone status rather than being reclassified as a major.
That backdrop gave White and Feherty the perfect opportunity to have a little fun - scroll down this page to watch...
Looking straight down the camera with more than a hint of mischief, White opened the segment by declaring: "Well, all anyone in the world of golf is talking about at the moment is when LIV Golf Adelaide will be confirmed as the fifth major championship,"
He then turned to Feherty. "David, what's your view?"
Feherty, never one to miss a punchline, responded with mock seriousness: "Well, it's about the strength of the field. We have gone from 54 to 57 players, I mean a gargantuan leap and it's obviously now the deepest field in championship golf."
White added: "What about the quality of patrons?"
Feherty replied: "Well, you know, with the patrons here are, apart from maybe the Waste Management (Phoenix Open), the classiest in the game."
White struggled to contain a smile before delivering perhaps the most pointed line of the skit: "And of course David, there are few prizes more coveted in world sport than a victory shoey."
Feherty’s response underlined the tongue-in-cheek nature of the entire exchange: "Yeah, I mean Arlo, who seriously wants to drink claret from a jug when you can swill a beer from a golf shoe with just a hint of bunion in it?"
He then turned towards the production crew to complete the joke: "That ought to do it, right? You should take that seriously..."

The playful segment was clearly delivered with a wink and a nudge, rather than any genuine campaign to elevate the Adelaide event to major status. But while the “fifth major” talk was pure theatre, there is no denying LIV Golf Adelaide’s growing stature on the global golf calendar.
In terms of raw attendance, the Australian stop has become the standout event on LIV’s schedule. This year’s tournament drew more than 115,000 fans across the week — the highest attendance ever recorded for a golf event in Australia and the largest crowd for any LIV Golf tournament worldwide.
The on-course action matched the atmosphere.
Anthony Kim produced one of the stories of the season, rolling back the years to claim his first LIV Golf title. The former Ryder Cup star fired a stunning final-round 63 at The Grange East Course to finish at 23-under par, three shots clear of Jon Rahm and six ahead of Bryson DeChambeau, Tyrrell Hatton and Peter Uihlein.

Kim made just three bogeys across the week in what amounted to a remarkable comeback. His previous victory had come on the PGA Tour back in 2008.
With LIV Golf events now receiving Official World Golf Ranking points — albeit in limited form — Kim has climbed nearly 640 places to 203rd in the OWGR standings.
So while LIV Golf Adelaide becoming the fifth major remains firmly in the realms of comedy, the tournament’s popularity and atmosphere continue to make it one of the most talked-about stops in professional golf — even if only for the right reasons, and occasionally, for a very good joke.
