England's Lottie Woad missed a short three-foot par putt on the 72nd hole to win the Meijer LPGA Classic — and then went on to lose in a playoff to Japan's Miyu Yamashita.

Woad, 22, was looking to become the first Englishwoman to win multiple times in an LPGA season since Karen Stupples in 2004, but she was denied in the most dramatic of circumstances.

Woad trailed Jing Yan by one shot entering the final round at Blythefield Country Club in Belmont, Michigan.

After watching Yamashita surge to the top of the leaderboard on the opening nine, Woad kept her composure to remain in the hunt for a third career title on the LPGA.

Woad went out in 33 shots and then took control of the tournament with birdies on 14 and a remarkable hole-out bunker shot on 17 to assume a narrow one-shot lead.

But the drama was far from over.

With a one-shot lead down the par-5 18th, Woad looked assured of the win in regulation play when drilling her drive down the heart of the fairway.

She tugged her second shot into the rough left of the green, leaving her short-sighted to the pin, but the title was still very much in her hands.

Woad played safe with her third shot onto the green to some 40 feet, and then rolled her first putt just past the hole to no more than three feet.

But she would lip out her par save on the left side and a resulting bogey saw her fall back into a share of the lead with Yamashita on 17-under par

Woad signed for a 68, while Yamashita fired a stunning 64.

On the first extra hole of a playoff, and back down the par-5 18th, Woad and Yamashita were both short of the green in two shots.

Yamashita chipped up past the hole to around five feet, with Woad pitching past the pin to 10 feet.

Woad missed her birdie attempt on the right side, and Yamashita then calmly rolled in her birdie putt for the win.

The victory marked the third of Yamashita's LPGA career.

The 24-year-old Japanese won twice on the circuit last season.

Woad and Yamashita were ranked seventh and eighth respectively on the eve of the Meijer LPGA Classic.

Woad, who only turned professional last season, was also going in search of her third LPGA title.

Chinese Taipei's Wei-Ling Hsu and China's Yan Liu carded rounds of 67 to finish a share of third on 15-under par.

South Korea's Minji Kang (66) and Australia's Cassie Porter (70) rounded out the top five on 14-under par.

Overnight leader Yan slumped to a one-over 73 to finish the week 13-under par in tied seventh.
