The Open: Which big names missed the cut after 36 holes at Royal Birkdale?

Take a look at the big names who will be heading for the exit door at the final men's major of the year in Southport.

The Open will turn its attention to moving day at Royal Birkdale without some huge names.

After 36 holes at the final men's major of the year, Lucas Herbert leads the way.

LIV Golf start Herbert, 30, tore round Royal Birkdale on Friday, equalling the record-low score at a men's major with an eight-under 62.

The Australian had a five-foot putt at the last break the record entirely, but missed left and almost dropped to his knees.

"A lot of emotions," he said after his round. "Whether it is relief, whether it is pride, whether it is disappointment.

"At the end of the day, we're in a great position going into the weekend.

"I got my name into the record books shooting 62. When the dust settles, that is what I will focus on the most."

He will head into the weekend with a number of star names attempting to chase him down.

Bryson DeChambeau and Cameron Young are in hot pursuit, with the likes of Robert MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood and world number one Scottie Scheffler not too far away.

Masters champion Rory McIlroy battled hard to make the cut whilst the world number one and defending champion, Scottie Scheffler, is also in the hunt.

Some big names will be making an exit at the halfway stage of The Open though.

GolfMagic has decided to take a look...

Fitzy was one of the pre-tournament favourites but just couldn't get anything going over the last couple of days.

The Englishman, whose younger brother Alex is firmly in contention, told reporters that he didn't believe he played that badly.

It's just links golf, baby.

Joaquin Niemann +4

Joaquin Niemann racks up victories in the LIV Golf League like nobody's business, but continues to underwhelm in the big four.

Aaron Rai +2

I walked past Aaron Rai, the 2026 US PGA Championship winner, outside the media centre at Royal Birkdale looking a tad forlorn.

I wasn't sure if he had just finished his round or heading out.

Think I know the answer.

Cameron Smith +2

The Australian falls short at a major championship once again.

Smith's absence from the top of the leaderboards at the majors is certainly a shame, given he was one of the very best in the world only a few years ago.

Hopefully the former Open champion can find a spark in 2027.

Harris English +2

Not what you expect from the American, who usually plays so well on the links.

The world number 32 finished runner-up to Scottie Scheffler at Royal Portrush only 12 months ago.

Wyndham Clark +3

Many people, including myself, thought the reigning U.S. Open champion was going to contend this week.

Jason Day +4

Not a great run in the majors for the former world number one, who was forced to withdraw from last month's U.S. Open with a back injury.

Viktor Hovland +4

Came into The Open with good vibes having defeated Scottie Scheffler in a play-off at the Travelers Championship in June.

But the Norwegian is among those that will be itching to put things right at the 2027 Masters.

Justin Rose +3

Justin Rose will be bitterly disappointed that he will play no further part at this Open.

You can bet your bottom dollar he’ll be back next year, determined to keep this Indian Summer to his career going.

Jordan Spieth +10

Not a pleasant return to Royal Birkdale for the 2017 Open champion.

It's taken me several years, but I think I've finally lost faith that there is any magic left in Spieth.

Depressing.
