Tiger Woods was denied entry at The Open – his response was pure genius
A forgotten mid-2000s incident involving the 15-time major champion has resurfaced during Royal Birkdale week, and it perfectly captured Tiger’s superstar status.
Tiger Woods was once stopped by security at The Open Championship.
The reason? He had forgotten his credentials. But the 15-time major champion’s response was as confident and iconic as most fans would expect.
The story was recently told by PGA Tour player Michael Kim, who recalled the moment Woods was denied access to the players’ locker room during the height of his dominance.
At The Open, players are required to wear credential clips to access restricted areas of the tournament venue.
However, Woods reportedly forgot his pass one day in the mid-2000s.
When security asked him to show his credentials, Woods looked around, spotted a huge billboard featuring his own image and name, pointed towards it and delivered the perfect comeback.
“That’s my credentials,” Woods said, before walking into the locker room.
At the time, Woods was not just the best golfer in the world – he was one of the most recognisable athletes on the planet.
His image was everywhere, and his influence stretched far beyond the sport.
The story is particularly fitting during Open Championship week, with Woods’ legacy at the tournament firmly established.
The 82-time PGA Tour winner etched his name on the famous Claret Jug three times, claiming victories at St Andrews in 2000 and 2005 before adding another Open title at Royal Liverpool in 2006.
Although Woods is not competing at Royal Birkdale this week, he has still made headlines during the championship.
Woods showed his support for close friend Tommy Fleetwood after spotting the Englishman wearing Sun Day Red apparel during Friday's second round.
“Lookin’ good out there @TommyFleetwood,” Woods posted on X.
Fleetwood is currently a free agent in the clothing world, and the World No.9 has been wearing a number of different brands over the past few months.
His appearances in Woods’ apparel brand have sparked speculation about a potential future partnership, although no deal has been confirmed.
Woods sounds keen for it though.
