Ben James has earned direct access to the PGA Tour after finishing top of the 2026 PGA Tour University rankings, becoming just the fourth player to secure membership through the program since its launch.

The Virginia senior officially locked up the coveted spot following the conclusion of stroke play at the NCAA Men's Golf Championship on Monday, joining an elite group that includes Ludvig Aberg, Michael Thorbjornsen and David Ford.

By claiming the number one position in the final PGA Tour University standings, James earns PGA Tour membership through the end of the 2027 season and is eligible to make his professional debut as a member at next week's RBC Canadian Open.

PGA Tour University was created to provide the leading college golfers with a direct pathway into the professional ranks while encouraging players to complete their collegiate careers. To qualify, players must compete at NCAA Division I level and spend a minimum of four years in college.

James capped off a remarkable senior campaign by finishing No.1 in the final rankings after recording a tie for 16th at the NCAA Championship. Remarkably, it was his worst result of the entire season, highlighting the consistency that helped him separate himself from the rest of college golf.

The achievement adds another milestone to an already outstanding collegiate career. James is set to become just the fifth player in college golf history to earn first-team All-American honours in four consecutive seasons.

His dominance throughout the season was reflected in the PGA Tour University rankings, where he occupied top spot every week of his senior year. In doing so, he became only the second player in the program's history to lead the standings from start to finish, matching a feat achieved by Florida State's John Pak in 2021.

James leaves Virginia with one of the strongest résumés in recent college golf history. He amassed seven victories and 35 top-10 finishes in just 46 starts while helping usher in a golden era for the Cavaliers. During his time with the program, Virginia captured its first two ACC Championship titles in 2025 and 2026, while also recording a runner-up finish at the NCAA Championship in 2025.

Those accomplishments, coupled with his outstanding consistency throughout the campaign, ultimately secured the PGA Tour University crown and the direct PGA Tour card that comes with it.

James admitted the pressure of leading the rankings throughout the season was significant, but he was proud of how he handled the challenge.

"I had a really good fall my junior year and played great all junior year, but it's reality when you see your name on the rankings," James said after securing the top spot.

"I'm just really happy with how I handled it because it's difficult. It's an amazing opportunity that PGA Tour U lets us college guys have, a pathway to the PGA Tour, and I'm looking forward to getting out there."

While James ultimately finished comfortably clear at the top, Texas standout Christiaan Maas mounted a strong challenge during the spring. Maas recorded five top-10 finishes and a victory to put pressure on the Virginia star heading into the NCAA Championship.

However, James' consistency proved decisive. His T16 finish at Omni La Costa Resort & Spa was enough to maintain his lead, while Maas finished tied 19th and ended the season second in the final rankings.

Maas will now begin his professional career with full Korn Ferry Tour status, alongside the other players who finished inside the top 10 of the PGA Tour University standings.

Players ranked second through 10th earn Korn Ferry Tour membership, while those finishing between 11th and 25th secure PGA Tour Americas status. The program continues to provide one of the most direct routes from college golf to the professional game.

For James, however, the reward is the biggest available. After one of the most accomplished collegiate careers of the modern era, he now follows in the footsteps of Aberg, Thorbjornsen and Ford by making the leap directly from the NCAA ranks to the PGA Tour.

His college career may be over, but the next chapter is only just beginning.
