Member of Donald Trump club questions US president's latest golf achievement

A club golfer who claims to have watched Donald Trump play "many times" has questioned the US president's latest achievement.

Trump announced on Truth Social on Monday that he had won what is believed to be his 43rd club championship at one of his golf courses.

The 80-year-old said he won the Super Senior and Senior Men's Club Championship divisions at his Bedminster course in New Jersey with a winning score of 2-under 70. 

Trump even posted video of the "winning shot", zipping a wedge close on the 18th. 

He then mocked his rivals' supposed lack of talent. 

"I won with a score of 70, and am so honoured in that, unlike the rest of the field, I'm given very little time to practise, because I'm focused on many other things," he wrote. 

"It's called TALENT, and I have it, and they don't!"

But Scott McConnell, founder of The American Conservative, has cast doubt on Trump's latest win. 

McConnell claims to have watched Trump play in person many times and doesn't believe victory was possible. 

"Trump is legit a pretty good amateur golfer," he wrote on X. 

"I'm a member of one of his clubs so I've seen him play many times. He probably was a four or five (handicap) in his prime. 

"He's 80, and drives it about 180 yards now. No one like that can win a senior club championship in any universe."

Trump has been accused of cheating at golf for decades. 

American sports write Rick Reilly previously wrote a book about Trump titled Commander in Cheat.

Reilly detailed how Trump or his caddies would regularly improve bad lies by kicking balls out of the rough, taking "mulligans", taking generous "gimmes" and playing by himself in competition. 

Trump has always denied cheating. 

Lindsey Graham, the late US Senator, previously said during a 2022 grand jury testimony: "Some people say you may outdrive him, but you’re not going to outdrive his caddie. It is what it is."

In other Trump news, Sports Business Journal are reporting the POTUS is expected to attend LIV Golf's event in New Jersey this week.

The event begins on Thursday, though it's unclear what day Trump will attend. 

Trump attended LIV Golf’s tournament in Washington, in May, as well as the PGA Tour’s Cadillac Championship, which was held at Trump National Doral in Miami.
