New golf book aims to inspire next generation of young golfers

A new book aimed at introducing teenagers and families to the wider world of golf is set to arrive as junior participation in the sport reaches its highest level in more than two decades.

From the First Tee to the Last Green: A Teen’s Guide to Golf, written by golf course architect Andrew Green and writer Lee Carr, will be published by Back Nine Press on 1 November.

The hardcover book combines golf history, course design, strategy, famous courses, drawing exercises and personal stories, offering young readers an accessible look at both playing the game and understanding what happens beyond the scorecard.

Its release comes as junior golf continues to grow. 

According to National Golf Foundation research, nearly four million juniors played golf on a course in 2025 — the highest total since 2004 — and junior participation has also risen 58% since 2019.

Green said the book was created for young people discovering golf, whether they are beginners or already considering where the sport could take them.

“Golf has a way of teaching lessons that reach far beyond the scorecard,” Green said, highlighting patience, creativity, perseverance and respect as some of the values the game can develop.

The book also explores the connection between a golfer, a course and the history of the sport, while encouraging readers to sketch their own holes and imagine golf’s future.

Green, who studied Turfgrass Management and Landscape Architecture at Virginia Tech, developed an early passion for course design by drawing golf holes in his school notebooks. 

Carr brings more than 25 years of editorial experience to the project, alongside her background as a former Vanderbilt University varsity soccer player.

The book has already received praise from prominent figures in the sport. 

CBS Sports commentator and First Tee National Honorary Chairman Jim Nantz described it as a study in “following your dreams, respecting history, and shaping the future”, while professional golfer Jessica Korda praised its positive message and appeal to families.

From the First Tee to the Last Green will cost $24.99 in the US and $34.99 in Canada, while pre-orders are available through Back Nine Press.

All authors’ earnings from the book will support the Gae H. Green Foundation, which provides scholarships to Botetourt County, Virginia, students pursuing education or agriculture at college.
