PGA Tour golfer in border-crossing ordeal: "They check his car for weapons"

A simple Korean barbecue dinner turned into an unexpected border-crossing ordeal for PGA Tour golfer Si Woo Kim, according to a fellow professional. 

The 2017 Players Championship winner was on his way to dinner ahead of the annual PGA Tour event in Michigan when he mistakenly drove to Canada and found himself questioned by border officials over whether he was carrying any drugs or weapons.

Michael Kim, who is not related to Si Woo Kim, shared the unusual story on X after inviting his fellow golfer to join him at a Korean barbecue restaurant he regularly visits.

It was not clear what year the incident occurred, but the debacle began when Michael texted Si Woo to ask if he wanted to try the "solid" restaurant. 

Si Woo agreed, searched the venue on Google Maps and began driving - unaware that his navigation system had directed him to another restaurant with the same name across the Canadian border.

"He doesn't have a passport, just his wallet," Michael wrote. 

Realising the mistake, Si Woo attempted to turn around, but it was too late. He was already in a one-way border route with signs instructing drivers not to reverse course.

"He drives to the gate and talks to the officer and says, 'I'm driving to dinner with a friend, I came here by accident,'" Kim added.

The border officer reportedly told him the mistake was common but explained that he could not simply turn back. 

Instead, Si Woo was instructed to cross into Canada and speak with officials on the other side.

After waiting in line for around 45 minutes, Si Woo reached a Canadian border officer and explained what had happened. 

Nervous, he pointed to his courtesy car and explained that he was in town for a golf tournament.

According to Michael, the situation quickly escalated, with more officers arriving to assess the incident.

"He's super nervous but tries to explain what happened," he added. 

"He points to his courtesy car and says I'm here for the golf tournament.

"This officer is not sure what to do so they drive the car to the side and calls another officer… then another… then another until 8!!! officers are surrounding his car and talking to him and each other. 

"They check his cars for weapons, asks him if he has any drugs or weapons, stuff like that and they finally let him thru."

The story had a happy ending, though, as the pair chowed down some 90 minutes later than planned.

Si Woo later confirmed the story on Instagram, writing: "Made it back safely without passport."

Michael ended his post with a fitting summary of the adventure: "Never a dull moment with Si Woo."
