PGA Tour winner "shocked" by Cam Young's slow start to the season
CBS on-course reporter Johnson Wagner says he is "shocked" by Cameron Young's slow start to the PGA Tour season.
CBS on-course reporter Johnson Wagner has expressed his shock at Cameron Young's slow start to the PGA Tour season.
Young, 28, has teed up in three events this year but only cracked the top 25 just once at the Farmers Insurance Open.
He entered the season off the back of an impressive display at the Ryder Cup having been the joint top points scorer for Keegan Bradley's United States side.
Young picked up three points in their 15-13 home defeat at Bethpage Black, including a memorable victory over Justin Rose in the Sunday singles that appeared to spark the beginning of what looked like an improbable comeback.
Last season, Young finally captured his first PGA Tour title at the Wyndham Championship and many believe the current world number 22 to kick on and join Scottie Scheffler's company at the top of PGA Tour leaderboards.
But Wagner doesn't appear to be convinced with the state of his game thus far.
"The way he played at the Ryder Cup, I'm shocked," said Wagner on CBS ahead of this week's Genesis Invitational at famed Riviera Country Club.
"He's made all three cuts. His best finish is a T-22, but when you look at these West Coast venues that he's playing, I think he was a hot pick last week at Pebble just the way he drives the golf ball.
"I know he's played Riv pretty decently, but he just doesn't seem to have it.
"And I was really expecting him to break out on this West Coast and sort of climb into that top 15 in the world and say, 'Hey, I'm here and and I’m going to be I'm going to be tough to beat this year.'
"And so far, we haven't seen it."

Young missed the cut at the Genesis Invitational last season but otherwise has a decent record.
In 2022, he finished runner-up to Joaquin Niemann. He also has two other top 20 finishes.
The aforementioned Scheffler is the betting favourite to land his 21st PGA Tour title this weekend.
But he faces stiff competition from the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Xander Schauffele and the in-form Chris Gotterup.
Our Andy Roberts reckons this 33/1 shot has a good chance this week.
